As with most Wrestling incident, this one certainly has the smell of a hoax or a publicity stunt. Professional wrestling has been pulling hoaxes like this for a long time. One of the most well known wrestling hoaxes came during the 70's when pseudo-comic Andy Kaufman got in an argument with then-professional wrestler Jerry Lawler, who preceded to slap Andy live on the David Letterman show.

While many people thought it was real at the time, both came out later and said that it was all just a hoax.
