Yes, there are differences between an Android and an iPhone. Do not worry about the Droid getting a virus. Just download a virus scanning app in the Android Market.
Personally, I like the Android better. The graphics of both are great and so, are the multiple apps available. The iPhone does currently have a lot more apps, than the Android.
They have about 200,000 versus Android’s 50,000. The biggest difference for me now would be having access to 4G. Sprint released the first 4G phone last year.
This was the HTV Evo and is amazing. Watching videos and internet surfing are incredible on the Android phone. Android 2.2 includes flash support.
Another gap is that Android phones are built with the ability to play Mp3, as well.
