I've never understood why cats are allowed to roam freely ... this only makes for them to easily breed. Do you agree? Asked by Karen7750 3 months ago Similar questions: understood cats allowed roam freely makes easily breed agree Pets > Cats.
Similar questions: understood cats allowed roam freely makes easily breed agree.
Sadly there are far far too many ignorant cat owners who think its cruel to keep a cat confined indoors, and also cruel to spay and neuter them. I HATE when people put their cats outside at night, stating cats need to roam at night its "what they do" WHAT a crock of sh*t. As I'm sure you've seen here on Askville, a lot of us try to educate these idiots, and usually the ignoramuses usually get very rude and irate.
But I will never stop fighting for the welfare of cats.
Well said. And so many cats get injured from 'cat fights' because they are so territorial! I also don't 'like' having my 2 cats confined indoors, but I allow them to be out ONLY when I am out with them... and they are now trained to stay only in our yard (believe it or not).
Even though I know my cats won't leave our yard, I'm outside with them to keep a look-out for those strays that do come around every here and there. It's the night-time howling that gets to me (usually when they're in heat)... And even though my cats are indoors at night, when there's an open window, the strays sit outside and howl, and this drives my cats bonkers! My feeling is that there should be some type of law against allowing cats to stray.

You're welcome, @ 3 hours ago, my 3 cats and I were watching TV, when all hell broke loose. A nasty cat fight was going on, my 3 cats were at the window in a flash, Bobby, who was a feral cat the first 2 years of her life was growling, her tail all bushed out. I wonder how many fights she'd been in before Animal Control got her and put her up for adoption.
She used to have nightmares, yeah I know sounds weird, but she'd be sound asleep, then suddenly she'd give a terrified yowl and jump up looking like she was ready to fight. As soon as I would say her name she'd come running to me, and jump on my lap, something she rarely does. So IMO she was having a nightmare, maybe bad dreams of her feral life.
I've had her 3 years now and those episodes seem to have stopped ( knock on wood) Gabby eats in her sleep, her little mouth is going like crazy making sucking sounds as if she is nursing, and her paws are kneading. It cracks me up! .
A No, it doesn't sound weird for Bobby to be having nightmares. I believe all living things dream.
I've seen the paws 'tremble' sometimes on my own cats... as if they running or chasing something. :o) I'm glad to hear Bobby's getting over his nightmares... poor thing. I'm sure I'd get a chuckle too to see Gabby 'nursing' in her sleep.
That sounds adorable! Thanks for the stories. Karen7750 3 months ago .
I know animals dream, I've just never heard of them having nightmares, Bobby (short for Bobette) is the only animal I have ever seen who appears to have nightmares. They tried to talk me out of adopting he, she had been at the shelter for 6months, no one wanted her, they called her unadoptable, but I talked them into letting me try. Last week we had a major breakthrough, for the first time since I've had her, she rolled over onto her back and offered her tummy to me.
:-) .
I agree with what's been said, --but-- I feel my cats would live a less fulfilling life if they were trapped inside 24/7. They're spayed and neutered and we live on a quiet dead end road so they get to go outside (and back in, and out, and in) until 5, then it's dinner time and the garage door goes down for the day. ***People who let unaltered cats roam free should be drawn and quartered.
I have a friend that does the same as you (as he lives near a wooded area), and I see nothing wrong with that... By having your cats indoors at night, etc. , you are being a responsible owner and you show care and concern for them. You might be interested in reading my response to trekincat. Thanks for your reply showing care and concern about this.

I don't really agree with keeping cats indoors all the time. I'm Sorry I know this doesn't tow the line with this thread. Maybe the situation is different in the UK, but it is very rare for cats to be indoor cats unless you live in a high rise flat or it is an expensive breed. My cat and all my neighbours cats are outdoors during the day, but everyone has a catflap so the cat decides.
I don't really understand the idea that cats that go outside live half as long, because all mine have lived to 16-18yrs.
And thanks for your reply. I also don't agree with what others say about outdoor cats not living as long as indoor cats... healthwise that is. But here in the USA, there are A LOT of cars and fast-moving traffic.
This is one of the 'downfalls' for outside cats. I have (myself) seen a couple of cats that were on a major roadway and were hit by cars... and while the law is that the driver is supposed to stop, they don't! And I'll tell you, that's an awful sight to see!
As well as hearing the 'thud' that goes along with the hit! I'll never get that out of my head! There's also the problem of having an overpopulation of cats and dogs here in the USA.
That is also a heartbreaking sight to see. It wouldn't be so bad if all the 'outdoor' cats were spayed or neutered, but they're not, and that's the basic cause of the overpopulation.OK. I really appreciate your response and I hope I've enlightened you to some of the problems here in our area (at least here in New Jersey).

That's why those of us who are more responsible than most, spay and neuter our pets. However, it does expose them to risks that may result in early death.
What people don't realize is that it is far healthier for a cat to be spayed or neutered. They also don't realize that once a cat gets used to being inside, they like it. They learn that being inside they get more attention, feel safer and they now have their own territory.
I always want to ask these people who put their cats out, because "the cat wants ot go outside", if they would let their children go play in traffic because "they want to! " We have to protect our furry friends just as we do our children.
I COMPLETELY agree! Even though my kitty tries very hard to bolt outside when we go in and out of the house, we force him to be an indoor kitty. He has too much personality and is such an awesome asset to our family that there is no way we will chance losing him to cars, cold weather or other animals.
Plus we live next to a freeway so letting him venture outdoors isn't an option. He's very well taken care of.
And as for breeding - that's not a concern, he is fixed, it's just the dangers that could kill him.
You make a lot of good points here. I'm glad to hear you are one of those responsible, concerned, caring and loving owners. :o) Karen7750 3 months ago .
Even though they are neutered, there is the issue of diseases. Outdoor cats live about half as long as indoor cats. Be sure you are giving them Revolution which covers fleas, ticks, ear mites and most importantly Heartworm.
Heartworm is carried by mosquitoes so any cat outside is susceptible.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
