Try a little DIY I once owned a pair of IRC Blizzard studded tires, but they were the 2.125x26 size, for mountain bikes. They worked fairly well on trails that were icy, but they tended to pack with snow and skid out just like any other high-flotation ATB tire. When I was riding with them, I did tend to stay up more than the other nutcases who like to ride under such conditions.

I don't know of any studded tire now made that will fit a 27" rim. Your closest fit would be a cyclocross tire, but all the ones I know of are for 700c rims, which are about 3mm smaller than 27s. I didn't see any 27" cyclocross tires at Nashbar, but that does not mean they don't exist.

Nevertheless, there is something you can do yourself. You'll need the following: 2 old touring tires - in a 27, these would be 27x1.25" 1 power drill with 1/8" bit 1 power screwdriver 1 pair of vise grips 2 Mr. Tuffy tire liners About 200 #8, 3/4" panhead sheet metal screws A corresponding number of small washers, with holes small enough for them to thread onto the the screws. The backing plates used with pop rivets also work very well for this.

Drill a bunch of holes, about 2" apart, in a zig-zag pattern through the old tires. You will be driving the screws from the inside of the tire out through these holes to make two rows of studs. Use the washers/backing plates on the outside of the tire to secure them.

Line the tires with the Mr. Tuffy protectors, to keep the heads of the screws from puncturing the tubes. Inflate the tires to the minimum recommended pressure for them. In the case of a 27x1.25, this would be around 70 psi.

The tires will ride like crap on the road, but should provide some grip on snow and ice. Make sure you wear your helmet, though, and don't expect miracles. Sources: Experience .

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
