Yes, Army basic trainees are given the option of going home during Christmas time. Do NOT buy tickets yet. He won't know until late November (at the earliest) the exact dates that he will be allowed to take leave for.

If you buy tickets for the wrong dates, he will not be allowed to leave early or come back late. And airlines are thieves about rescheduling flights.
