Actually even though you don't board you dogs, if they come in contact with other dogs you should have them vaccinated once a year, but this is something you should disscuss with your vet as to whether your dog needs it or not.
I am not a vet but I do know much about taking care of my previous/present dogs. I have a service dog like a guide dog and she gets bordetella intranasal spray the vaccine is live and the dog is getting a very small amount vs. the actual subcutaneous injection. Those who get an injection will be fine all year while a dog who gets the spray that is live but very small amt of the vaccine may need the spray twice a year.
If you have a dog that is playing with other dogs, going into pet stores, sniffing the ground - yes - I would recommend an injection yearly or the spray biannually. If you do put your dog in a kennel I would get the spray biannually. This is a little more than what you are asking but…Kennel cough is horrible to have in a dog.
I went into a pet store the other day & heard a little dog sitting in the window coughing, hacking & must have felt horrible. I knew what it was but asked & they stated that the dog had Kennel Cough. I asked if the dog was treated & they backed away as I was standing there with my service dog.
I asked for a card. It was the 2nd time I had been in the store too. I called the main office & spoke to the vice-president & he said "oh, I saw you this morning - you were the woman with the standard poodle that has a service dog."
Yes, I saw you too & is there a reason that you have an untreated dog that has kennel cough in your window? This dog needs to be in a sick bay, treated, not be in a pet store setting where other animals might be brought in. He was stunned that I was aware & was telling me that they has a vet for their stores & they will get the dog looked at.
Spreading kennel cough is so easy - where the dog has walked - you have to wash off your shoes very well because it can spread to other animals. Transmission from hands to another animal is easily done too. Where my service dog is from, if we have Graduate Support Class on a sunday and dogs have kennel cough in the kennel - class is canceled.
Our organization Rule of thumb is to only have your dog with dogs that you know. Do not have your dog sniffing noses if you do not know that dog. Its too easy.My dog is like a 2nd child to me & I cant let her get sick.
Vet bills are expensive as they are.
If your dogs never ever have contact with other dogs; then they probably will not come in contact with bordatella. However; if they come into contact with other dogs anywhere - not just in a kennel; then they should still get the vaccine.
