To expand on Dan's answer. When you originally connected the laptop to wireless, it asked for a network key as well. You (or a family member) entered that key, and it was saved.

The desktop, for some reason, has forgotten the key. (The key, by the way, is either a 10-character or 26 chARACTER password that is encoded and passed back and forth)There have been recent askville questions about how to find and reset a key, so I will not repeat them here.
