My parents are coming to NYC to visit. What hotel should they stay at? They don't like to stay at chains.

Well, absent any further input, this would have to be my recommendation... The newly renovated Grammercy Park Hotel. Go to its link: gramercyparkhotel.com/index.html Of course, if you need to be near Broadway or Lincoln Center or a Midtown office for business, there are many alternatives. I happen to like some of the luxury chains--not because they are chains, but because they help define "service".
I'm not sure they will match Bangkok's Oriental, but there are many wonderful "chains" that will take very good care of your parents; e.g. , the Four Seasons fourseasons.com/newyorkfs/ Whether expensive or budget priced, many people find hotel rooms smaller here than elsewhere. Some travelers who arrive by car, prefer to stay outside Manhattan and commute in. You can do that nicely from Westchester County, north of the City.
But, it is a different experience than walking out your hotel's front door onto a Manhattan street or avenue. To put this into SF metaphor, one could stay at one of my favorite Bay Area hotels--the Stanford Park Hotel in Menlo Park--and commute into SF on I-280 which in the morning has to be one of the most beautiful commutes anywhere. In the NYC area, you could stay at a nice place, leave your car and commute into the city on the Metro North RR--forget the I-280 view here. I'm afraid the view from the train will disappoint, unless you stay along the Hudson River and you are visiting in the Fall.
This hotel is brand new, albeit a chain hotel. It is near a White Plains high-end shopping plaza and a not too far cab ride from the train (hotel probably has shuttles for guests). http://www.ritzcarlton.com/en/Properties/Westchester/Default.htm The one-way commute in/out is about 45 mins. Of course there are many less expensive "chains" and even a few "unique" guest houses/mansions.
The one mansion I know is a little run down and without an elevator. I'd take the Ritz Carlton any day. Wish your folks a nice trip for me.

Depends on location, personality and price. I suggest the newly opened Gramercy Park. Might be a little pricey...but, the location downtown is very central...the hotel is very comfortable...privately owned and newly designed by Studio 54's mad genius Ian Schrager.
If your parents are a little bohemian, and into high-art and style...then they'll def. Dig this incredible spot. Google it!.
Radio City Apartments If you are looking for a reasonably priced place in Midtown, I recommend the Radio City Apartments. I've stayed there a few times when I have gone visiting the city, and the staff is very accommodating, the location is great, and the price is reasonable. radiocityapts.com/ Sources: Experience .
I have a friend who visits NYC on a regular basis. He stays at the Edison - in theater/Times Square area. Says it is NOT a luxury hotel but convenient, very secure and affordable.By not being luxury, I don't mean that it's a dump - just not 4 Seasons.
1 You said "coming" so I wondered where you lived and worked. Having them close to you would be convenient. Then I noticed you are in SF.Is this a business trip, in which case where where will the business take place?
Is this a personal vacation trip? In which case, can I assume price is not the primary selection factor? They don't like chains.
A chain to me would include Best Westerns, Ramada Inns, etc. But, a chain would also include Fairmont Hotels and Ritz Carltons.Do I understand you correctly? If price is a factor, would they be willing to commute in from outside Manhattan? Will they have a car?
How old are they? 40s? 50s?60s?70s?80s?

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
