If you are apathetic, it is likely you feel that way because you failed at something in your life that you tried to succeed at. But since you didn't have the tools back then to succeed, you simply lost hope and decided to quit going for your goal of happiness. This happens to a lot of people, and it is because they made their whole life purpose to be based on one goal and they failed to maintain a positive attitude about it, therefore they failed early on at it.

The key to success is to maintain positive and good beliefs and thoughts, in general, not just about your goal. IN order to get out of your apathy towards living life, you have to realize that everything has a purpose. And everything that exists in your life's purpose is to help you become more knowledgeable and to gain understanding about life, so that you may grow and become free from human suffering.

Suffering is only present when one lacks understanding -- lacks awareness. Lack of awareness is present because you take the world personally. You are probably thinking that everything is happening to you because everyone doesn't care about you, or they are all selfish.

And that is true, everyone is only expressing themselves, even their opinions about you and the way they treat you are just reactions to their fears in life. The unforgiving person, who judges other people by every little "sin" has a heavy heart and is of course going to be unhappy. The key is to let go of the apparent "sins" of everyone.
