Need help analyzing an email header Am talking to someone over the email who is presumably traveling in an exotic location half the world away right now (he has hotmail), but his X-Originating-IP in his email header is pointing to Seattle. Does not add up does it? I have hotmail, too, and my X-Originating-IP is pointing to my computer.

On the other hand, maybe hotmail Sometimes substitutes the originating ip... don't know. And because Hotmail is Microsoft, and Microsoft is close to Seattle, this does not sound too unrealistic... anyone in the know? Several reasons In theory, Microsoft being in Seattle has nothing to do with it. The X-Originating-IP is supposed to reflect the IP address of the web browser, not the mail sender. So if the person is traveling, the IP address should probably be somewhere else.

However, there are several reasons it might show up as Seattle anyway: He’s using a VPN to tunnel to an office in Seattle. This gives him access to various resources on an internal network that might not be available from the outside. The connection to Hotmail need not go through that, but he might do it anyway to hide his location or just because of a misconfiguration.

Or he might be using something like a TOR router to hide his location (e.g. If the exotic location is a country that might be snooping on him. ) If the location is so exotic that it doesn’t have an internet connection then he might be dialing in (long distance) to a phone in Seattle, or using a satellite network whose routers are in Seattle. Or maybe he’s just lying about his location.

But the X-Originating-IP is not proof of that.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
