Pets and Animal Lovers: Why do (many of us) speak in baby-talk or some sort of pidgen speach to our pets?

I've been doing it since mid-childhood, even to birds. Lots of other people do it. Dogs seem to like it, cats act indignent but otherwise seem to like it or accept it.

Other animals probably don't notice much difference in how we speak to them. Why do we do this, and what do you think the animals think of us? It seems natural and loving and nurturing, but it's really not how we'd like to be spoken to, nor would we want others to hear us speak this way.

Is it just because they're 'cute'? We really don't even speak to small children this way. Why do we do this?

Haha Oh geeze i'm SOOO guilty of baby talking to animals.. the horses must be sick of it by now.. With me always doing the little voice and calling them little cuties.. My cat must be pretty tired of it too.. But you just can't help it!

I only speak proper academic English to my pets! I figure if brain-transplants or genetic upgrades ever give them the ability to talk, I don't want them spewing all that baby-talk drivel back at me! If talking pets ever became fasionable, most owners would get the poetic justice that they deserve.

I read a lot of science fiction, and I believe, although it may not happen in our lifetime, this sort of "designer pet" is inevitable, with all the moral and social quandaries that will entail. At first, only celebrities will be able to afford talking mammals, then after a while, they won't cost much more than a talking bird... "Get Fuzzy," here we come! In case you haven't heard, it's an excellent comic strip... 1 I didn't use baby talk with my human babies, and I don't use it with our dogs or cats. However, both dogs and cats prefer a gentle or quiet tone as it lets them know I am not angry. They also frequently like to hear words they recognize as having a good meaning, such as good dog, outside, their names, and so on.

One of our dogs seems to recognize about 40 words as she responds appropriately to them. However, if the same words are said in a harsh voice, she sneaks carefully out of sight.

3 Well, I do it cause they seem to like it. When I talk to my kitties that way, they snuggle up to me and purr, and start doing the kneading thing. When I talk that way to my dog, she immediately starts wiggling her behind and wants to kiss me.

They like it. That's why I do it! .

A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
