Question about eating red meat. Warning: it's pretty gross! A friend recently told me that red meat takes several days to digest because first it has to rot in your stomach. Is that true?

No, its not true. While red meat is harder to digest than many other foods, it does not stay in your stomach several days. Protein is made up of huge molecules and it takes a while for the enzymes in the stomach to break them down so they can be absorbed by the body.So while the meat is not rotting in your stomach, it is being broken down into nutrients your body can use, the same as all other food you eat.
All food you eat will slowly be released to your small intestine. The rate at which this happens depends in part on what you ate, and in part on how full your intestines already are. All food leaves the stomach within 2 to 4 hours.
Fruits would be in your stomach about half an hour, and red meat might stay in your stomach for 3 to 4 hours, depending on how much you ate. Sources: mayoclinic.com/health/digestive-system/A... westonaprice.org/moderndiseases/digestio... besthealth.com/besthealth/bodyguide/reft... .
It just ain't true You think your question was gross, wait til you read this answer: That's NOT true. Red meat passes through your system at the same rate as other foods. There's no mechanism in the digestive tract that can sort out the contents of the stomach like your "friend" suggests.
I'm going out on a limb here and guessing that your friend is a vegetarian? Whether s/he is or not, it's not correct. Now here's the "gross" part.
Next time you eat a hamburger or steak, eat some corn with it. The next day (or so) you'll see the corn again. (told you it was gross, but hey -- it's the natural process!) And of course, that's not all you'll see.
You'll see all the waste product from the meal that went through your digestive system at the same time. I think I'll grill a steak and some corn on the cob for dinner tonight......
Yes it takes a while, but it's not rotting. Meat can take longer to digest than vegetables do, because breaking down the long protein chains into individual amino acids does take time. But I'd call that "digesting" rather than "rotting".
It usually takes around two days, though it's highly variable. And that's your whole digestive tract, not just your stomach. Vegetables are more prone to "rotting" in your gut than meat is.
We all have bacteria in our guts that help us digest vegetable matter. Cows couldn't live without them: they have to break down the very complex cellulose, and animals have a hard time doing that. We can't do it at all, which is why we don't eat grass.
The cows let bacteria do it, and they digest the bacterial waste products. Well, we do eat grass, kinda. We just have to turn it into a more digestible form first, outside our bodies.
The easiest way to do that is to feed it to the cow, and then eat the cow.
I don't think so..... I think it just takes a little longer to digest meats.......I don't think they rot in your stomach. If so wouldnt' that make you sick? I think a well balanced diet with meats, veggies, whole grains, and fruits will keep your stomach in good shape.

I think it would be like if you put it out on the counter for 3 days, but it is starting to digest. I prefer to get my.. protein from nuts and seeds, etc. I know I need more than that, so I do eat cod. Spirulina has some amino acids in it, which I also take.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
