And really, who cares if someone is famous - it won't benefit you in any way... what a silly question. What causes people to suck up to famous people? Ever been around these types?

It is down right embarrassing! I really do not feel the people around them talk them up, lord knows I went the other way! I felt this suck up was and is embarrassing and do not understand this behavior (I would go in the other direction and the people I did meet I hope realized I am not like him).

I once tried to become famous by writing a book... but the book was in Italian and it was about mathematical methods in theoretical computer science. I can say now that I have about 45 fans, but only if all those who bought the book did like it! I'm now in the process of writing another book which I'm sure will give me fame.It is about curious mathematical facts, it is in English, it is 340 pages long and it is not yet finished.
