Should children take iron supplements?

In general, iron supplements probably aren’t necessary because most kids eat enough iron-fortified foods. I routinely screen for anemia once a year until age 4. After that, I don’t usually find screening necessary.

There are exceptions. I usually recommend that female adolescents who are menstruating take a multivitamin with iron as a way to supplement their iron intake. And, if a patient is in a high-risk group, I do whatever testing or assessment is necessary to determine their needs.

Helpful hint: Help your kids absorb iron in foods by pairing iron-rich veggies such as beans and spinach, and fortified breads and cereals with vitamin C or foods that are high in C. And avoid pairing tea or milk with iron-rich foods. From Good Kids, Bad Habits: The RealAge Guide to Raising Healthy Children by Jennifer Trachtenberg.
