I knew that many of the wealthiest pay a lower effective tax than average workers, long ago. And there really is no debate,Buffett himself has said it publicly. And even those who do not derive their income from Capital Gains, often find ways to use the same loopholes.
People like Bill Gates, who get no salary, and are instead paid through stock transfers or options,in the end paying much lower effective tax rates than almost everyone who works for them. I will add one thing though, they are free to pay more if they want,Buffett knows that, right? And throw in SS,Medicare and other taxes and the fact is the richest in our society may pay more in absolute dollars, but as a percentage of income, they pay practically nothing when compared to average workers.
Average workers who will soon see many things they paid for taken away,or at least severely limited. Social Security? Forget it,they will either raise the age high enough that you die before you collect pennies on the dollar for what you put in,and Medicare is on its last legs thanks to massive mismanagement.
Had both programs been run right, chances are they would be fine. Social Security especially, since it would really be sitting on a massive surplus right now,but that money was taken and spent. Yet these will be the first items cut, instead of the massive pork in other areas.
Imbalance in the tax code is everywhere. John Kerry's wife, for example, has a tax loophole written into the tax code just for the Heinz a family. This is one of MANY tax loopholes favoring one taxpayer over another.
Dedductions and such are ripe for abuse. Until we have a flat tax, there will always be those that pay more, that pay less, and pay not enough.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
