In my hometown, a severely obese man was denied the right to adopt a child because he was too fat. I'm not sure what to think of this...what do you think? Asked by Phez 48 months ago Similar questions: severely obese adults adopt children Health > Fitness & Diet.

Sounds like just another form of discrimination... Well, you haven’t supplied much info such as the man’s medical condition, financial condition or whether obesity was the official stated reason for the rejection. I’ll assume it’s just the obesity then. If so, this is just another clear case of discrimination in my opinion.
Obese parents are not better or worse then other parents. I can think of so many more appropriate criteria for adopting (or real) parents, such as previous criminal records, financial stability, history of raising children, etc. But obesity? Is it the fear he knows absolutely nothing about proper nutrition?
- Are there any checks validating or requiring non-obese adopting parents to eat healthy? Is it the fear he would be such a role model, the adopted child would want to be just as obese? - Any credible and valid research to validate such an assertion?
It is the fear he would be so sick - because of obesity - he would have no time to care for the child? - Any credible and valid research pointing that obese parents are less able to care for their children because of obesity related illnesses? - Any DNA testing done to validate adopting parents are not with a higher risk for cancer or other diseases that may cause shorter life spans or future inability to care for their children?
Is it the fear he would just die to soon unable to financially care for the child? - Any credible and valid research to pointing obese parents are less likely to survive until their children reach the age of 18 or 21? I wonder if there is any credible and valid research stating obese parents are not as "good" as none obese parents?
How they decide somebody is too fat. Is their a new weight cap placed on adopting parents? It seems obese are under intense scrutiny as to their "evil" impact on society.
This decision to reject an obese man from adopting fits that line of thought. I sure hope is jobs is not the next place to veto him out - he may cause "irreparable" damage to the the company’s desired "look" sweetMonkey's Recommendations Social Discrimination And Body Size: Too Big To Fit (Obesity Modern Day Epidemic) Amazon List Price: $23.95 Used from: $11.36 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5 (based on 1 reviews) Tipping the Scales of Justice: Fighting Weight Based Discrimination Amazon List Price: $21.00 Used from: $7.65 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 out of 5 (based on 5 reviews) .
In the particular case you brought up, if that individual is medically unfit to be a parent, then the adoption agency made the right choice. If, however, that person is able to care for him or herself and is in a good enough condition to care for a child as well, than their decision was based on discrimination rather medical fact (which is obviously morally and legally wrong). Since I know nothing about the people involved, I can't say whether or not this man should have been allowed to adopt.
If he feels that he has been discriminated against he can always enlist the help of a lawyer and take legal action against the adoption agency. I agree SEVERE obesity is the result of either a supreme lack of self-control, a deeply disturbed individual, or a physical problem. The heart of a severely obese person cannot deal with that weight and will give out much sooner than the normal person. It is in the interests of the child not to be adopted by such a parent, at least until the weight problem is under control. It is not a matter of discrimination for the sake of discrimination, but of being discriminating about what is best for a child.
Children take time and energy -- lots of both. The severely obese person is ten steps behind in offering either. In addition it sounds from the opening question as though the man was single. Single parenting may be common now, but it is also for the birds.
Been there, done that. Kids need functioning homes, preferably with two parents, a man and a woman, in a stable marriage. I know that makes me old-fashioned.
But it is still far fewer kids from that kind of an upbringing, especially when one of the parents is able to stay at home or work from home, who get in trouble later..
I think, and this is my own personal opinion...I think that is totally wrong! So he is obese, and severely obese could mean just over 100 pounds overweight or more....what difference does that make if he can raise a child who needs love and a home? I guess that means when I was severely obese, they should have taken my children away from me...Sheesh.
That just makes me mad! I mean if he adopted a child and had to take care of that child and take the child out to play, etc, he may even lose weight! Unless there is more to that than meets the eye, I think that is just plain wrong!
My children loved me and I continued to do things with them even though I was very obese! That did not change the love I had for them or the love they had for me! Sources: my opinion LglSec's Recommendations ADOPTION IS A BLESSING FROM GOD 11 oz.

They should But they must know that they are setting bad examples, and may not be able to keep up with the kids. Then again, maybe not, since people in high-risk occupations and situations may be turned away.
