The federal gas taxes haven't been raised since 1993 (when gas was less tha 1.00/gal). Isn't it about time to raise those taxes to a more realistic rate? Say about 75 cents / gallon?
These taxes are used to maintain roadways, and the cost of maintaining the roads is a lot higher now. Asked by Schelli 6 months ago Similar questions: federal gas taxes raised 1993 tha 00 gal time raise Business > Taxes.

It would have been nice if we'd raised the gas tax during the recent oil glut. Right now it's going to be politically impossible to raise the gas tax. I do think that such a thing is necessary.
Our infrastructure is in terrible shape, and raising money via the gas tax would help. Even the most desperate "starve the beast" Republican can grasp that the federally-supported road network is good for the economy. Unfortunately, it's a very unpopular tax to raise.
Of all the costs you pay, only the price of gas is written on large signs on every intersection. People are uniquely attuned to it, in ways that they aren't for other costs, even ones with a more significant impact on their bottom line. So while I'd like to see the gas tax raised, and have called for that for years, it's impossible right now with the price of gas so high already.
This makes perfect sense. If fact, with the exception that there ought to be a similar tax for non-gas vehicles (and hey, I would be willing to accept it being lesser) as a portion of the road maintenance effort DOES benefit them as well. Gas tax has the advantage over a weight/mile tax of being automatic - rather than forcing record keeping; and the attendant potential for fraud.
Bear in mind I am saying this as the driver of a 12 MPG work truck.
Taxes amount to about $2 out of the $4. Are you kidding? .
Completely untrue, Rock. Federal gas tax is 18.4 cents for gas and 24.4 for deisel. The combined average, including state taxes is 28.1 cents for gas and 53.1 cents for deisel.
I'd like to know where you get the disinformation you have. This is a tax that would hit us all, but hit the dumbasses with Hummers and fuel wasting pickups and SUVs the hardest, but would be put to good use - our nations aging infrastructure. Schelli 6 months ago .
I'll double check my sources. Anyway, don't you think our problem in America is too much government spending not to much government taxing? .
There is no doubt the US government is wasting hundreds of billions of dollars on crap we shouldn't be - such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and most of the DoD budget. Schelli 6 months ago .
" "Are Back Federal Taxes deducted from Unemployment checks?" "how much would raising taxes by 2% on those earling over $250K raise. " "if I owe the STATE back taxes can they take my federal return?
How much federal taxes do you pay on 45,000.
If the money for our roads and highways comes from gas taxes.
How much would raising taxes by 2% on those earling over $250K raise.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
