Well, all of the tire sites I found say that run flats are the recommended tires for a mini. As for required, I don't know - seems to me you can legally put any type of tire on your car. That being said, if a tire store refused to put another kind on your car, I would pay attention to that.

They clearly care about you and your car. If they didn't, they would have just sold you any old thing to get your money. Do some looking around on the net, and read what the experts say.

I called the BMW dealership and they said the run flats were recommended but not required. But this tire store literally would not give me my car back without run flats. Said they could not legally do it.

If it were me, the first thing I would do is demand to see the manager. Then, I would demand he show me the legal statutes concerning this matter. However, the time for that has clearly past.

So, Monday morning, I would be on the phone to this tire stores corporate office, to lodge a complaint. Start out polite but firm. There might very well be a law in your area stating they cannot give you your car without those tires.

I highly doubt it, but you have to start somewhere. Worse come to worse, if the tire store is wrong, and corporate is not willing to make apologies, then you could report them to the BBB in your state.

It is a single locally-owned store, but large and reputable tire dealership. I know I should have fought it before I let them put on the tires, but I couldn't get an answer at the time, and of course needed my car. I am still trying to find out where I can ascertain whether this ruling is true or not.

I'm going to say no. There is no way this company can keep your property from you because you refused to follow their advice, and buy what they demanded you buy. You should have called the police.

I'm not one for suing at the drop of a hat, but if I were you, I would tell the store manager you are taking his business to small claims court - and then do so.

They don't have to sell you anything if they deem the product to be unsafe in their opinion. Calling in the police or suing is a stupid thing to do. Perhaps if you actually READ the question, dee/dum, instead of trying to find an excuse to insult me, you would have seen that the business refused to let him have his car until he bought the tires.Pathetic.

I don't know about mini's but BMW sells thier cars with or without. Jay D's commments are on the money too. I did some reserch of tires for bimmers myself and found the same.

You can legally put anything you want on your car but finding someone that will is another thing. In todays world when you have lawyers chasing potential lawsuits putting any tire on that is not OE only puts the shop in a no win situation. They sell you what "YOU" think is right you have an accident you sue the shop (not to mention you have a flat you don't have a spare).

So to protect themselves they refuse you can't sue them they have a right to refuse. Caring about your familys safety is not against the law. TURBOB:CALLING CORPORATE AND THINK THAT YOU ARE GOING TO BULLY A RETAILER IS ABSOLUTELY BS IT CUSTOMERS LIKE YOU THAT GIVE GOOD CUSTOMERS A BAD RAP.

YOU ARE ONE OF THE REASONS THAT GOOD RETAIL MANAGERS ARE HARD TO FIND BECAUSE YOU ARE A SO CALLED PROFESSIONAL.....A HOLE .

Run-Flats are a bad design choice on the part of Mini-Cooper... and I really respect that company and their cars. These are $330 tires (each)! Fortunately you can replace these with ANY good tire (the wheel itself isn't specially designed for only the OEM tires).

There are 3 kinds of puncture resistant tires... 1) Internal sealer seals punctures automatically (like your blood clotting to seal a wound). 2) The sidewalls are reinforced so they can support the weight of the even without air. 3) The wheel itself has integral tire--a second tire a few inches inside the outer tire (like NASCAR cars use).

Yours is the 2nd type and you can replace it with any good tire. Got to replace all 4 tires though. The tires are terrible.... for these reasons:1.

The rigid sidewalls give you a stiffer ride when filled with air.2. The rigid sidewalls make the tires heavier increasing the "unsprung" weight and rotational weight of the car hurting fuel economy and reducing rate of acceleration.3. The tires can still have a catstrophic blow out (the real danger) and more probably if you have drive on them low on air.4.

Because you can't always tell they are low on air (by just looking) your changes increase that you may drive on them causing #3 (above).5. They supposedly give you better control durign a "fast flat" but most flats are slow... they aren not talking about a catastrphophic "blow out" (like popping a balloon with a lit cigarette) which is actually presents the greatest danger of "loss of control".6. Continue to drive on the tire and it will be damaged and in danger of a catastrophic blow out later when you do get it repaired and filled with air.

7. Good luck finding a responsible repair facility that will patch the tires (especially if the puncture happens near the side wall). Many refust to patch them cause they have no clue how long you have driven on them and if they are fatigued to near "blow out" stage.

T They fear they could be held liable (maybe... someone could attempt it... not worth the worry). My recommendation... pick a good set of tires in the same size and replace all four tires and never buy "Run-Flats" again... if you buy a new car and it comes with "Run-Flats"... ask them to change those out those silly things for good tires.

They may have been concerned that if the tire failed and they sold it that you could sue them. It sounds like it isn't illegal but it is against their policies.

They don't have to sell you anything if they deem the product to be unsafe in their opinion. Calling in the police or suing is a stupid thing to do. Just go to the next tire store and buy from them and if they don't sell you what you want go somewhere else.

You can't force them to sell and install you a product for your car but I am sure you can walk in, buy the tires and install them yourself.

I am assuming they would have let you keep the tires you had on the car and you could drive away to another store. If you are saying they kept your car and wouldn't return it to you that is certainly actionable.

If I switch my mini cooper run flats to regular tires, is there a place for a spare tire?Joe.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
