UGH! I can't hear out of my right ear! Suggestions for stopping the insanity...? I just woke up like this about 3 days ago.

I hear muted sound and a buzzing in my right ear. I've tried to get my ears to pop, but they won't. I have no medical insurance, so going to the doc is hard to do.

I can massage the outside of my ear and that improves the performance for a few minutes, but then it closes up again. Any suggestions for stopping the insanity? It's driving me completely bonkers!

Ear wax There’s a very good chance it’s just earwax. Jaw movements move earwax in an outward direction, but if it’s made faster than it’s eliminated, it can build up. Then, after sticking a Q-tip in there (not recommended, but people do it anyway), or after scratching an itch or sleeping on that side, it can form a plug up against the eardrum.

If it is earwax (and considering you said that it eases up for a little while only to plug back up after a minute or two, I’d be willing to bet that it is), you can try a olive oil. I’m not making that up; ear wax is largely made up of cholesterol, so it’s soluble in fat. Add about five or six drops of oil to your ear, leave it in there for about 10 minutes, and then flush it out thoroughly with comfortably warm water.

(Trust me, there’s no easy way to do this. Your best bet is just to get into the shower, because you’ll end up wet any way you look at it. Take a cup into the shower with you, fill the cup, and pour; don’t aim the water from the showerhead directly into your ear.

) You can get over-the-counter earwax solutions - Debrox is a brand name that comes to mind - but I remember talking with a doctor once who said that olive oil usually works better. My other suggestion is to get some gum and chew. The chewing motion could help/speed up the migration out of the ear canal.

This may not work; it’s possible that wax is packed against your eardrum tightly enough that it’s going to have to be forcibly removed, and it’s also possible that my guess about earwax is wrong (although the olive oil/chewing gum treatment probably isn’t going to hurt anything even if you don’t have an earwax plug). In that case, you will need to make an appointment - assuming it’s earwax, they have devices that direct a high-pressure stream of water into the ear canal. However, you should speak with a nurse over the phone before you make the appointment; at my clinic, this is a duty performed by a specialist nurse (that’s gotta be a fun thing to look forward to every morning!

), so even though an uninsured patient would have to pay, they wouldn’t pay as much as if they actually had to see a doctor. I have a crooked ear canal, so I’ve had to go in a few times for this procedure, and I had a doctor who was totally willing to just write the order for an ear cleaning without actually seeing me first. And if it turns out not to be earwax, you’ll want a medical professional looking at it; it will need to be diagnosed and treated.

I’ve got my fingers crossed for you that some oil will do the trick, but if not, be prepared to call the doctor on Monday. Sources: Living with a funky ear canal .

Ear Infection An ear infection is another possibility. If it is an infection, your inner ear would be filled with fluids, puss, blood, which would create a mucus-like fluid. While this would usually cause a great deal of pain, it does not always.

The first step in this case would be to open the eustacian tube with a decongestant. The inner ear secretes a fluid that drains through the eustacian tube into the back of the mouth. If it is blocked the fluid stagnates into what I described in the first paragraph.

Use Sudafed (generic)(take two 30 mg tablets) as the decongestant PE products are not that effective. As my pharmacist said, "the PE products didn't work years ago & they don't work now". You may be able to massage the soft area behind your ear along the jaw line down to right below the jaw.

This is the approximate location of the eustacian tube & you may be able to massage some fluid out of the tubes. It is possible that you would need an antibiotic to heal the infection if the above 2 suggestions don't help. If it is a wax build up, hydrogen peroxide will help remove it much more effectively than just water.

If your ear drum has ruptured, any fluid introduced into your ear will cause imense pain when it hits the eustacian tube. I am not a medical person, but I've had enough ear infections to know a few things. If things aren't better in 3 or 4 days, see a doctor.

There are other possibilities that could cause your symptoms. As said in the comments, your ears are sensitive & fragile. Don't take chances.

Good luck & get well.

I can't hear out of my right ear! Suggestions for stopping the insanity Sounds like your ears are stop up with ear wax. Flushing ears out with warm water should help in flushing out the wax.

Having a long hose shower head helps out a lot . Every time you take a shower , turn the flow of water to pluses and hold the shower head to each of your ears . This flushes out the ear wax great as I had the same problem and this has solve my problem .

Try candling (sp. ).... You might want to try "candlling". Most alternative practitioners can do this.

I have a Reiki practiotioner who does a good job. Also try peroxide, may also try Colace...an over the counter stool softener (it will soften the wax...(Oh you have to pierce the capsule and drain the gel into your ear. If all else fails go to your primary health care provider who will do an ear irrigation.

This is easy, quick and guaranteed to work...And remember....don't put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear! Good luck .

1 The first thing that occurred to me was an insect since I've had it happen. I do not recommend this but his is what I did when I knew it was an insect. I carefully held a vacuum cleaner hose up to my ear to suck it out.

Pretty stupid but it worked. It did give me some ringing afterwards. Do you have a friend that can look in to see if there is something there?

Look for a cheap otoscope at the drugstore. It would be handy to own anyway. Maybe a friend has one you can borrow.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
