Weekly Topic Inspiration: Creative ways to keep kids entertained over the summer?

Mine is a simplistic answer, but I live in a hot, humid climate with long very hot summers. My six-year-old great-grandson just spent the night with me, and this morning (instead of watching cartoons on TV) he sat at my large farm table with paper, pencils, colors and his imagination, drawing pictures for GG (that's me--shorthand for great-grandma). My favorite will go on the clothboard I keep to display the artwork of all my "greats."

Fortunately, we have a creative family with many artist, young and older. Reading books should always be a good choice for summer, at least during mid-day when it's much too hot to go outdoors. Children who read a lot from an early age can only gain from the experience.

I recommend giving kids books very highly!

Some things kids like to do is learn something interesting. Like making bread the old fashioned way. It takes all day and they can watch it rise and bake.

You could buy some wheat berries,fill a tray with indoor plant mix,sprinkle berries on top ,gently press them down and keep them watered with a fine spray. Be sure the tray has holes for drainage. You can buy them for that purpose.

Set them under cupboard lights or other florecent lights,about a foot from the light. It's interesting to watch the wheat grass grow and it's good in salads and super nutricious. You could use them for researchers for anything you need to know during the summer ,maybe for some winter project you might be doing next winter.

Just give them any job on the computer and they're happy. Maybe research and download some of your music. Many magazines advertize for pen pals for same age students in other countries.

For middle age kids you could start a penny ante club where no one loses much but they have that competition going. For younger children you could make a weekly trip to the library and reward reading with a movie and pop corn,or something else they consider a reward worth reading for. Take them to dollar stores and garage sales to buy stuff for the Secret Santa Box early.

They will be happy to be boss of the box. Etc etc.

This is such a great question! It headed me to my own list of ideas--which I hadn't used yet this summer and decided I needed to pull out since we are hot here in Texas and needing entertainment. Ideas for older teens during the summer months can become frustrating especially with the economy for jobs are hard to come by. When the weather is severe and thunderstorms are called that day. One thing you want is to have them indoors.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
