I have a canon 20d, and a new fast zoom lens, (70-200 L 2.8 IS), I still get blur! Asked by tennisbel 47 months ago Similar questions: helpful tips indoor sports photography Arts > Photography.

I would suggest you do this, Put the camera on AV mode. That allows you to select the aperture value you want, set it for 2.8.Next set your ISO to atleast 800, most likely 1600. Now make sure you are set on the exposure dial on the back of the camera to the center or 1 click to the left that is 1/3 stop under exposed and using L glass you will be fine.
Now you should be able to get the shot. You might also want to change your focal point to center weighted so what ever you have in the center it will focus on. If the players have dark jerseys, beware as that will slow your shutter speed if you focus on the dark jersey, then try a face.
I hope this helps. If you are still having issues, you might need a camera like the 1d Mark3 or even the 40D that will allows the higher ISO with less grain/noise in the shot. If you have more questions send me a message, Im happy to help you out.

You are on the right track... I think you have made a good start. You have some good equipment & a fast lens. Keep in mind that even though you have a fast lens, you are still limited in how slow a shutter speed you may use while hand-holding.
Many books I have read say that a good rule of thumb is 1/x, where "x" is your focal length. So with your lens all the way at the 200mm focal length, you should not use a shutter speed slower than 1/200 of a second, and even at this shutter speed, you will need to practice good hand-holding technique. That is what makes a "fast" lens fast...the large aperture allows for fast shutter speeds in less light.
Keep in mind that at wide open apertures, your depth of field(area of acceptable focus) becomes very small, and that this could be interpreted as "blur". The next step would be to increase your ISO to a setting that would allow you to get to those fast shutter speeds, but keep in mind that at very high ISO, you will get digital noise, thus reducing sharpness. Next item to think about would be a mono-pod- which would allow you to get those necessary high shutter speeds while allowing you some flexibility in your aperture choice, while also keeping your ISO setting down to a reasonable setting.
I have photographed youth basketball for about 25 years, first as a high school newspaper photographer, and following as 3 sons & now one daughter have played. I truly think indoor gymnasium sports are the most difficult shooting situations in sports. The action is very fast paced, ambient lighting is horrible, and the right equipment can get crazy expensive very quickly.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
