I was so impressed by how much control we can have over our heart rate when I did a two week yoga retreat in the mountains of India. I had never been so quiet with myself and allowed myself not to think of anything at all (the essence of yoga and meditation according to our yogi). I had suffered stress related problems like ulcers and gastric problems when I was in school, but after learning how to do yoga and completely relax, it was a health saving technique that I have used many times since.

I think Yoga has been a bit understood in a lot of places outside India as it has become a session in doing difficult and painful poses, that was never the essence of Yoga as I learned it. I think if you can find an instructor that helps you truly find relaxation and inner peace, you will improve your health in many ways. Hypertension would definitely be aided by these types of techniques, but it has to be someone who is open to this style of relaxation.

This website, abc of yoga. Com, discusses the science behind Yoga's benefits for hypertension as well as suggested poses that would help: abc-of-yoga.com/yoga-and-health/yoga-for... Medical News today cites clinical trials showing Yoga has a positive effect on reducing hypertension: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/80402.php Other alternative methods that are recommended by WebMD is changing your diet to cut out salt and fats and eat more fruits and vegetables, you probably saw that one coming. But there is little doubt that a healthy diet can greatly improve your overall health and well being no matter what your medical problem.

A wise friend studying nutrition said to me, if you are ever feeling a bit under the weather, change your diet and drink more water. It is very sound advice. You can see more about changes to make in diet in detail here: http://www.webmd.com/hypertension-high-blood-pressure/guide/hypertension-complementary-alternative-treatments Chinese therapies like acupuncture is also a well used method to reduce stress and high blood pressure as well as Chinese medicines, but many Western medical and scientific communities seem unwilling to study these as far as I have seen.

However, this article in Acupuncture Today is quite a compelling argument and I don't think anyone would argue that acupuncture is a danger to try out for yourself if you are examining alternative therapy. I have personally tried and had success with acupuncture therapy. http://www.atpracticeinsights.com/mpacms/at/article.php?id=28024 The American Heart Association does cite small clinical trials that show hypertension cases are positively affected by acupuncture: http://hyper.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/48/5/838 Hope this helps @jjwalsh.

The other answerer already provided very good advice, but I do have a little bit to add. There are quite a few well-established ways to prevent or reduce hypertension naturally, without using medication. The most effective way is through diet and lifestyle...avoiding processed foods and eating a diverse diet of whole, natural foods.

Regular exercise, and keeping your stress level as low as possible are both very important too. The specific alternative remedy that I know the most about is hibiscus tea. I actually have researched this topic quite a lot and put together an article on it on a site that I run: ratetea.net/style/hibiscus/148/ This article cites scientific sources if you want, it would be redundant to just re-paste them here because there are a lot.

But a quick summary, hibiscus has been studied extensively in controlled, clinical trials, and has not only been shown to be effective for lowering blood pressure, but has been shown to be as effective as some prescription medications. It is, however, less effective than the newer, strongest meds. Biscus is very safe though...it is widely consumed as a beverage in many parts of the world, and in the studies I read, it had a complete absence of strong side effects, making it much safer than any of the prescription drugs on the market, so if it gets to the point of someone needing to take a drug, I would really recommend look into hibiscus.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
