We have pancakes, even though it will not mean the end of eggs during Lent. Here in France, there is a local supermarket where all the shop assistants dress up as witches, fairies.... Imagine coming round the corner to see a wraith filling the shelves! Asked by salamanda 47 months ago Similar questions: Mardi Gras Shove Tuesday UK Society > Holidays.

Pennsylvania-Dutch Fausnaughts The folks with German heritage used to make homemade donuts on Shrove Tuesday. They called them Fausnaught and referred to the day as Fausnaught Day (or Donut Day). I remember they'd be around for a couple days so I guess that defeated the purpose of having something BEFORE Lent that you weren't supposed to have during.
Mmmmm I can still remember the taste and texture of a warm donut! .
1 OH WOW! I never knew the reason behind pancakes on Shove Tuesday. I just asked a question about thei different traditions for Mardi Gras.My family did pancakes with coins and buttons in them (sterilized and eaten carefully) for a treat, but never mentioned the connection to eggs in Lent.

2 Well, when you live in poor rural communities, as Brits did in 'the old days', it was a matter of "waste not, want not". Mind you, I wonder how the hens knew not to lay eggs for forty days?!

They wiouldn't have to follow the church rules I suppose. Maybe THAT'S where all the Easter chicks come from!Wow... that could be the reason for chicks being an Easter tradition. My family wasn't Catholic either, but very British. My parents were born in Newfoundlan (hence my ID) and talk about Britis in poor rural communities.
Pre-confederation Newfoundland (prior to 1949 for those of you who are curious) could have served as the definition of that term..

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
