If you can remember something specific about them - like they got a new puppy a few weeks ago, or their mother was moving cross-country, then you can maybe throw in a question "How is your mom dealing with the move?" or something along those lines, just so it doesn't seem entirely like you've forgotten them. I know that my mom ran into someone she knew quite well (who we had known both as an upholsterer and nurse) at the Opera, and it seemed like this lady didn't remember her at all. She was kind of distant and perhaps a bit unfriendly.It is definitely better to forget someone's name and be very friendly and interested in them than to remember their name and act like you couldn't care less about them.

Another even more awkward situation is if you have someone with you when you run into this person, and they expect to be introduced! I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
