One method may work better for an individual addict than another. It's true that many addicts abuse the system,and I guess that needs to be brought under control. But going cold turkey can kill an addict, and methadone may be a lifesaver for those who want to quit.
For hard-core addicts I think the best method would combine a bit of both: drug withdrawal monitored under inpatient care, possibly with drugs involved if the doctor saw fit to gradually lessen the physical addiction, while helping the addict to understand why he chooses to use drugs. The outpatient counseling and support to help him stay on the sober path. Drug and alcohol addicts do a lot of terrible things, but they're also human beings who deserve our compassion.
There always has been and always will be a certain segment of society that overindulges, and all the arguing which method is best to help them isn't going to stop that.
