What epic fantasy or science fiction novel would you recommend?

So far, I've enjoyed Jim Butcher, Raymond Fiest, Sharon Shinn, Tolkien, and C.S. Lewis. I'd love to find other interesting books and authors! Asked by tamarind 48 months ago Similar questions: epic fantasy science fiction recommend Arts > Books > Books - Science Fiction.

George R.R. Martin's "A Song Of Ice And Fire". I'd strongly recommend the books in the "A Song Of Ice And Fire" series by George R. R.

Martin; it's a huge, sprawling fantasy with lots of characters. Really great, compelling stuff. Unfortunately, it's not done yet, so if you read the first four volumes, you'll be in the same boat as the rest of us, waiting for him to finish the series.

I'd also recommend the fantasy works of Guy Gavriel Kay. "Tigana" and "A Song For Arbonne" are great stand-alone books, and his first trilogy, "The Fionavar Tapestry", was a favorite of mine for a long time. S later stuff is fantastic, too.

Kay is a great writer with a really nice prose style. A last recommendation is the "Lyonesse" series by Jack Vance. Jack Vance's style isn't for everyone; his characters are nowhere near as straightforward as a typical fantasy warrior, and this series owes traces its roots to fairy tales as much as the typical European myths that a lot of fantasy draws from.

Robert Jordan, Stephen R. Donaldson, George R.R. Martin, Richard K. Morgan, Neal Stephenson, Orson Scott Card I've read and enjoyed all of the authors you mentioned.

I'm a big fan of Jim Butcher. Both the Dresden Files series and the Furies of Calderon series are simply awesome. Here are a few of my favorites: Robert Jordan - Great writer but he died recently with his epic series unfinished.

He did pass on his knowledge though so hopefully someone will finish it. - Wheel of Time series - Huge, wonderful fantasy series. Not finished, though.

Stephen R. Donaldson - Probably the best writer I've found so far. S books can be very dark and depressing but they're also simply awesome reads.

I'd recommend either starting with one of his books of short stories or the Mirror of Her Dreams series. - Gap series - Very dark, cool science fiction. Definitely not for kids or the squeamish.

- Thomas Covenant series - Dark, powerful, beautiful fantasy. - Mirror of Her Dreams series - Very good fantasy. Much lighter than his other series.

- Daughter of Regals - Short stories - Reave the Just - Short stories George R.R. Martin - Excellent author that I've only discovered recently. He's written lots and lots of books but so far all I've read by him is the Song of Ice and Fire series. - Song of Ice and Fire series - Very deep, detailed, complex fantasy series.

He's not done with it yet, though. Richard K. Morgan - Simply awesome author.

Very fun reads. I'd compare him to Jim Butcher in a lot of ways. Great concepts and stories, though.

I've heard Thirteen is good but I haven't read it yet. - Altered Carbon series - Very gritty, cool science fiction series. Neal Stephenson - One of my favorites.

He definitely has some wonderful concepts and his books are generally fun, exciting reads. I didn't care for his Quicksilver series. They're huge and very complex.

I just couldn't keep all the characters straight. - Snow Crash - Cool, funny science fiction chock fool of killer technology. - Cryptonomicon - Sort of a history of cryptography.

Great story with great concepts. - Diamond Age - Excellent near-future science fiction. More wonderful concepts.

Orson Scott Card - Very versatile writer with lots of great series. - Ender's Saga series - Actually, I only read the first book in this series (Ender's Game) and it was just so awesome and complete in and of itself that I just couldn't bear to continue. I may break down and read the other books in the series one of these days.

I've heard they are kind of hit or miss, though.

Here's a few that I've read recently and enjoyed: Lynn Flewelling has two series that I enjoyed: The Tamir Triad, consisting of three books: The Bone Doll’s Twin, and The Oracle’s Queen. They’re fantasy novels about how the rightful heir to the throne of Skala is hidden as a child and grows up to regain the throne, punish the usurpers, and save the kingdom. Sounds fairly typical, but there are a lot of plot twists and unexpected happenings.

The characters are very real, very well-developed, and the world the author creates has depth and substance. The book really held my interest. She also wrote the Nightrunner series: Luck in the Shadows, Stalking Darkness, and Traitor’s Moon.

This is about the adventures of two spies, Alec and Seregil who masquerade as thieves in order to collect information for the wizard, Nysander, in order to help him defeat the powers of darkness. Once again, a fairly typical story line, but the characters are appealing and well-rounded and the author really makes you care about them. There’s plenty of action and adventure, too.

You might want to check out The Veil series, by Christopher Golden. Book 1 is The Myth Hunters; 2 is The Borderkind; and 3 is The Lost Ones. A rich guy who feels trapped by the expectations of his family walks off in a snowstorm on the eve of his wedding and discovers another realm--beyond the "Veil."

There’s a whole bunch of info about world mythology intertwined into the stories, and what happens when these myths are threatened with extinction forms the basis of the story. C. E Murphy has a great series: Urban Shaman, Thunderbird Falls and Coyote Dreams, in which a Seattle police officer/car mechanic turned reluctant shaman solves paranormal crimes, saves the world, fixes her purple Mustang, and tries to avoid dealing with her own (considerable) problems.

I found these books funny and absorbing. Written in the first person, the heroine’s ability to see the humor in the mess of her life will have you laughing out loud and rooting for her. I wanted to recommend Rachel Caine’s Weatherwarden Series, Jack Campbell’s Lost Fleet, and Simon Green’s Nightside novels, but I’m afraid this is getting too long, so I'll just put the names out there.

All these books are available on Amazon, and they’re all, in my opinion, well worth checking out. Hope you find something you like here! I can think of several, but here are a few. The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. It's arthurian legend told from various female characters points of view.

The Earth Sea books by Ursula K. LeGuin. People used to refer to these as the Earth Sea Trilogy, but a fourth book was added years after the first three.

Please don't judge this series by the horrible thing done to them by the Sci-Fi Channel. The books are worth your time. The made-for-tv series is not.

Also, don't discount them for their simplicity. A smart child could enjoy these, but there's still a lot there for the adults among us. And for a different kind of science fiction, the works of Octavia Bulter especially Kindred.

The sci-fi is more social other-world building and less physics based. She doesn't explain or even attempt to explain how the time travel works. It's more about what happens to our character, the nature/nurture question and geneology. It's worth the read, and not your typical fare.

Get the three books of the Elizabeth Moon "Deed of Paksennarion" trilogy. There are two additional related books, both should be read after the first three. You can get them as an omnibus edition--three in one, or as single books.

The single books are-- Sheepfarmer's Daughter Divided Allegience Oath of Gold Paksennarion, the heroine of these books, runs away from home to join a military unit--in this society, about 1/4 miliraty is women. The author is an ex-marine, and the military aspects are terrific. While she loves much of her life, she feels the need for more satisfaction in what she's doing--in battling something less mundane than the soldier-for-hire campaigns she's experiencing--and finds what she's looking for in droves.

Elizabeth Moon's books are terrific--they're ones I order pre-publication, and my son and I pass them back and forth. These are heroic fantasy of a high order. I found a collection of her short stories first, and began to seek out her novels when the short stories impressed me.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
