Voice, clarity of screen, Bluetooth, memory card I have a Garmin 650 and just drove 2800 miles on a round trip from NJ via NC, Memphis, and Cleveland; I have never had an easier time driving. There was no map confusion, if I missed a turn a correction was made and while there is the occasional bug; (The Garmin kept telling the Harrah’s casino in Cherokee, NC was across the street. ) I never failed to find my way around using this device.
I went with the bigger screen and wish I had gone for the bluetooth tech (Garmin 660) The memory card comes in handy if you want to download updates or want to listen to music or review digital picture. The voice alerts to turns come in handy although they can be occasionally misleading or a bit too late, but you become accustomed to that quickly. My sister in law didn't want all the bells and whistles so she went for the more basic version of the nuvi and she is quite pleased.(Another reason the big screen comes in handy.
All three Garmin, Magellan, and Tom-Tom all have something to recommend them but in my research The Garmin was the most user friendly. Good luck! I've had a couple so far The two major things that make them easy to use Touch Screen (easier to use than any of the others, much less distracting & faster) ONE DVD, otherwise you'll be picking up 8 of them with any update I think some are coming out with traffic updates which would be huge.
I ordered my car from the factory with all of the options I wanted. At the time, these cars were in short supply, so I was sorely tempted to just buy the only one they had on the lot.It happened to have a GPS system, which cost about $2,000 extra. I thought long and hard about how much use I would get out of it.
Was I not only going to be driving to a large, unfamiliar metropolitan area, but would I also be spending enough time there that I'd be out and about without a direct destination already planned? When I rent a car, I love the GPS system - I'm in an unfamiliar city, and the neverlost system from Hertz assures me I can get to the hotel, get to the remote work site, find a place to eat, and so on. Locally, though, I would have no use for it at all.
I'm actually driving to St. Louis tomorrow. GPS would be a convenience, but I've just printed off 3 google maps, and I'll have my internet-capable phone or my laptop if I need to look something up. However, when I fly out to Southern California in a few weeks, I'll have a GPS-equipped rental for navigating the hell of LA traffic.
So for me, ultimately, I didn't think the use I could get out of it would justify the huge cost. And if I want to get one down the road, I can get a nice one that I can move from car to car for less than $500. One of my co-workers even has free GPS on his phone that he uses when he travels.
The other things that were on the table were: How long is the initial subscription How reliable was the service (I went online to the car forums and read about that model and what other people were experiencing) How expensive are updates after the subscription expires How user friendly is it (the one in this car, for example, can only be operated when the car is in Park...they don't take into account that a passenger could be safely operating it) .
