A Pembroke or Cardigan Corgi is a good choice. While they are small dogs, they are "big dogs in a small dog’s body". I worked with a Corgi breeder who bred both kinds, but now has been breeding only Cardigans - her personal preference in temperament.
She had mostly Pembrokes when I was there, and they have excellent temperaments also. I had never even seen one at the time I went there to apply, and I fell in love with them. They are so loving and affectionate!
Cardigans have longer bodies than Pembrokes. Their bodies are much longer than they are high. They have wider set ears, but the main difference is that Cardigans have tails ,whereas Pembrokes do not.
I hated seeing the tails being removed when the Pembrokes were puppies. They put a rubber band around them and they fall off from lack of circulation. Sad, but that’s the way it’s done.
They are not yappy, as they have "big dog barks" and they are no hyper like most little dogs. Their temperament is placid, and they are good with children, other animals and strangers. They are herding dogs, so it always said that they may nip your heels, but I never really encountered that.
I do remember standing in the yard with 8 puppies biting my jeans and my shoelaces and literally not being able to move as I would step on them! I had to call Sophie so she could call them away! But that is the way of all puppies :-) Another dog I have always loves, and they are extremely affectionate is the Whippet.
They call them "velcro dogs" as they are always with you and like to sleep under the covers. That may not be everyone’s cup of tea though, but I would like it. Whippets also have a calm temperament and are good with children, strangers and other URL1 may be larger than you want though.
Their weight runs in the 20 to 30 pound range. These are a few suggestions an my personal favorites. Please don’t forget that there are rescues for every breed of dog.
You can save a dog’s life and save a lot of money at the same time by getting one from a rescue. That is the route I would choose, unless you are planning to breed the dog. Also check the shelters!
Are you completely set on a purebred dog? A mixed breed is really the best choice as far as health issues and general temperament as well. Use an open mind when looking for the dog you want.
You may just see one at the shelter that weaves its way into your heart at first glance. Japanese Chin I always had big dogs (newfoundlands, pit bulls, mutts), and now for the first time in my life I have a small dog, and I just adore her. These are, in my mind, the selling features of this breed: quiet (not a big barker) not a huge need for exercise a lap dog--a good snuggler while long-haired, doesn't need a lot of grooming (I give her a "pedicure" about once a month, an occasional trim along the ears and hind-leg-feathers, and brushing really only as needed, but less than weekly). (don't know if these things are a breed thing or just her personality): my Japanese Chin loves other dogs as a rule, although dogs who are barkers do scare her.
She will "alert" me to someone at the door with a bark, but is friendly with all who enter the house. She is great with my teenage boys, but can be shy of small children. She does want to play with the cat, who doesn't want to play with her, so she settles for chasing (not such an endearing behavior).
Aside from the cat thing, she is pretty well trained, including sitting, giving a paw, etc. Good Luck! .
A Chihuahua, but keep in mind, not all chihuahua's have the personality you're looking for I’ve been very fortunate to have owned 2 chihuahuas at different times of my life, both of which have been very quiet, sociable with other people & dogs, and well mannered. A lot has to do with the way they’re raised, and socialization plays a key factor with this breed or you can end up with a very scared little biter. Both chihuahua’s absolutely LOVE being around cats, almost more than other dogs!
Even my sister’s cats, who have had no previous dog introductions, really hit it off and started playing like crazy (which is funny to watch, as typically the cats are twice the size of the dog! ). I’ve enjoyed their small stature, easy to carry & travel with.
If socialized, they get along so well with other dogs, as well as cats. They’re easy to care for (I only feed my Chihuahua 1-2 onces a day). He prefers cat toys & bed, rather than doggie play things, which is much easier on the budget to get a 99 cent toy mouse, then a $9.95 stuff squeak toy.
Best of luck in your search! .
Options Check out this site, it has a list of breeds and their qualities: URL1 Many of the small breeds have a tendency to be high-strung... but alot of that can depend on how you raise them.
