What is the most "helpful" votes that you've seen on a single answer since the new and improved Askville?

I'm asking because I remember at least one question on the old Askville that got over 75 votes - meaning that a lot of the community saw it. I think the most helpful votes I've seen here (on an answer, since we don't vote on questions) is 8? Maybe 10?

Why not allow voting on questions we like, too, and then let those stay at the top of the Q&A list on the home page? It seems like this format is designed to flash a few things in front of a few people in as short a time as possible. Asked by Goodbye!

Great question Goldie. I was wondering the same thing. On one of my questions Marissa received 13 helpful votes... do?

RequestId=73420210.

Well, I'd go with TU on both. I'm against the TD, period. It sure destroys the sense of community to not know if people are even seeing things.

I find it hard to believe that there weren't more than 13 people interested in Marissa's answer, for example. Goodbye! 15 months ago .

And, BTW, this is the first I ever saw of your question you linked to. It must have "flashed by" and been buried before I got a look. Thanks for the link.

No problem Goldie! There's a new member of AV who asks a lot of questions and motivated the suggestion to add the TU/TD feature to Q's... When people ask loaded questions and proceed to give a TD for every "differing" opinion then they are not getting the gist of what a Q&A site is all about.

The most I have seen of late is 8 of 9. For me, doing creative things with the helpfulness statistics is premature. To me, the helpfulness rating, as currently implemented, is unhelpful.

I am not usually a whiner...so what do I mean by this? What is helpfulness intended to be? Is it a quick sign to those who encounter Askville Q&A in searches that a particular answer is better than another?

Is it a sign of popularity in Askville? Is it just a button to channel Askviller feelings about an answer without any real meaning? Is it a way of saying thank you for taking the time to answer?

The BA designation before was definitely imperfect. But, the higher rated answers were generally better than the lower rated answers. That is a gross generalization I feel qualified to make after over 3 years of answering Qs in AV.

I invite you to go to a variety of Qs in our new system--which I am acclimating to. The helpfulness ratings have little to do with the quality of the answer in my book. Perhaps on a few individual Qs.

But, overall, there often are best answers with 0 or only 1 helpfulness point, whereas there are friendly quips but useless answers that are more highly rated. I find helpfulness ratings affected by: - who answers earlier vs later; the first answerer typically gets more eyes on her/his answer than the subsequent answers - who has more friends than enemies in AV; there are some individuals who because of their reputations in the past get down-rated regardless of the quality of answers; there are others who get up-rated by friends when the answer does nothing to answer the Q - the popularity of the Question; more eyes, the greater the likelihood of a higher ratingI think the ratings should try to approximate a metric of answer quality, not popularity. Answer quality is different for different people, but it is generally a function of: - does it answer the question (which may have changed/been edited since the answerer wrote the entry)?

- does the answer provide reputable support links to justify the answer--unless it is a pure opinion Q--not unlike footnotes in an article or Wikipedia entry? - is the answer written well? Is it well-structured?

Is it written in clear English? Does it make the case for the asserted answer? Are exhibits or pictures used when they can help illustrate/communicate an answer?

We are a social networking site. Community is important. But, if Askville also wants to be a relevant Q&A site, competing with other good and bad ones out there, it needs answer quality.

Surprisingly, AV still gets answer quality now and then. But, the helpfulness ratings I have seen rarely reflect quality. Unaided, I wonder if helpfulness will contribute to a dilution of quality here in AV?

Just the opinion of a veteran AV Answerer of over 3 years...

I agree with you completely. Well said. And to underscore your point, I will now rate this a thumbs up - but I will also rate the other answers a thumbs up as a gesture of appreciation for participation. So, no, my "vote" is not a reflection of merit, even though this answer has great merit, imnsho.

Thanks for the compliment...well your Q just changed my experience. I have now seen 14 of 14 and I suspect that will rise.

I think the most I have seen was 7 or 8. Pitiful.

Not good. Not good at all. As we have all said countless times here, it would be nice if the team would clue us in on what the business model is.

If it is to generate lots of words for google searches, but keep the traffic and info flowing at a fast rate and not have members linger on any one question, they've achieved it. I'm afraid that won't retain long time members, though, as we tend to form out attachments to people, not just random information. Sure, there are some people who are playing this like solitaire, and just racking up helpful points as a winning hand, but those aren't the kind of people that I come here for... I have google for that.

As much as it saddens me to say this, I think it is clear that retaining long-time members is very low on the priority list, if indeed it is on there at all. Apparently Askville doesn't need, or value, long-term members that much; what they want is volume, and the changes have helped to increase the volume. It's a shame that the quality of the posts seems to be going down as the quantity goes up.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
