There is no such thing as "Pentecostal religion. " The religion that a Pentecostal is part of is called, Christianity The majority of Pentecostalism holds to the same core essential ideas as other Christian denominations. Pentecostalism usually traces itself to the Azusa Street Revival in 1906, Bonnie Brae, Los Angeles, the minister being William Seymour. In fact the convicting power of the Holy Spirit was moving in that time period, such as the Welsh Revival in 1904, (Evan Reberts, and Rees Howells).
Before the 1906 Azusa Street Revival the teaching held by Charles Finney, D.L. Moody, and R.A.Torrey was that a person could be "born again" and not have the Holy Spirit. This secondary, subsequent, and additional experience to salvation, and what every "born again" believer should know whether they have or not is theologically called, "The Baptism with the Holy Spirit." (See What the Bible Teaches by R.A.Torrey, and The Baptism of the Holy Spirit by R.A. Torrey, also read Charles Finney's conversion experience about the Baptisms of the Holy Spirit coming upon him. ) What makes Pentecostalism different on the idea of The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is the belief and practice that one of the major evidences of The Baptism of the Holy Spirit, from the Book of Acts, is Speaking in Tongues.
Speaking in Tongues is also described by Pentecostals as the prayer language of the Spirit. The interpretation that Speaking in Tongues is the evidence of The Baptism of the Holy Spirit comes from Acts 2 - The Disciples Receive the Baptism With the Holy Spirit Acts 8 - The Samaritans Receive the Baptism With the Holy Spirit Acts 10 - The Gentiles Receive the Baptism With the Holy Spirit, Acts 19 - The Church of Ephesus Receive the Baptism With the Holy Spirit, and from 1 Corinthians 12-14.
