What is the universe expanding into?

The standard answer that Big Bang theorists will tell you as that the universe is expanding relative to itself, but there is nothing outside the universe for it to be expanding into. In other words, since space and time do not exist apart from the universe, there is no "outside". There is another theory, however, that is not a replacement to the Big Bang, but a modification of it.

The "brane concept" says that our universe is an collision between two higher-dimensional membranes, creating the universe we see. It's actually expanding into a higher-dimensional universe. There is no way to test this, however. It just attempts to explain some mysteries, such as the origin of the universe, or why gravity is such a weak force.

It also includes a concept for understanding dark matter. It is actually matter in a separate universe that has a gravitational effect on ours.

The universe is not expanding into anything; it is everything. Space is not empty, but has a fabric. This fabric is what something rotates in, even without anything else.

PBS showed "The Fabric of the Cosmos. " Perhaps you can watch it online. You could also read Brian Greene's book of the same name.

There are many well-respected physicists, such as Stephen Hawking, Lawrence Krauss, Sean M. Carroll, Victor Stenger, Michio Kaku, Alan Guth, Alex Vilenkin, Robert A.J. Matthews, and Nobel laureate Frank Wilczek, who have created scientific models where the Big Bang and thus the entire universe could arise from nothing but a quantum vacuum fluctuation -- via natural processes. I know that this doesn't make sense in our Newtonian experience, but it does in the realm of quantum mechanics and relativity. As Nobel laureate physicist Richard Feynman wrote, "The theory of quantum electrodynamics describes nature as absurd from the point of view of common sense.

And it agrees fully with experiment. So I hope you can accept nature as she is — absurd." For more, watch the video at the 1st link - "A Universe From Nothing" by Lawrence Krauss, or get his book (at the 2nd link).

It's not expanding "into" anything, the universe is finite but unbounded. There are no edges. There is no "outside" the universe.

Space-time is part of the Universe. The Universe is expanding into Ain Soph Aur.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
