They're exactly where they always were. Better, perhaps, with the advent of the Internet, and increased ability to disseminate your message. People frequently misunderstand what "freedom of speech" means. It guarantees your right to say things.
It does not guarantee your right to an audience, or your right to have other people publish it for you. You can open a web site to say just about anything you like, including violent and hateful things. Just call up a web host and send them a few dollars; it's not expensive.
But it does cost money. "Free as in speech" is different from "free as in beer". You can speak without restrictions, but nobody has to carry your words unless you pay them to.
So the people who do pay for web sites get the right to restrict your speech on their web site any way they like. You're free to open up your own, if you like, and say just about whatever you want. Your right to speak isn't _completely_ free.
Child pornography isn't covered, though if you like you can create a web site to claim that it should be. Don't expect anybody to read it, though, and those who do will probably disagree. There are a few other restrictions when speaking out loud, in public.
Privately-owned spaces have the right to throw you out, for any reason. Truly public spaces often have ordinances to limit your volume, if not the content of your message. There actually is a conflict of rights there.
If you favor the right to speak even when it's unbelievably annoying, you might consider donating to the ACLU, which promotes free speech even for people who you don't want to hear from, like Fred Phelps. They are right in the thick of the truly controversial parts of the limits of free speech. But for the most part, free speech is extremely alive and well in this country.
People aren't prosecuted for speaking. People sometimes get the impression that their freedom is limited on other people's web sites, but that's not actually your right. Your right to your own web site, however, is virtually unlimited.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
