No need for fancy brand foods if you're just hiking. Apple juice is great for sugar-based energy getting into your system quickly. I prefer Gatorade, since I get stomach problems from too much sugar.
For food-based energy, you need to get a mix of sugars, starch carbs, protein, and fat. Best combination: bacon-wrapped brownies. Once you've had one, you'll never go back to wimpy granola bars or chalky "energy" bars.
For boosting energy, endurance, mental mood, try chocolate covered coffee beans. Or mix up your own version of a Starbuck's frappucino. Something like 1cup coffee, 1 cup milk.
