If you do this regularly, buy a piece of PVC pipe. Basically, you need to extend the rear roof rack out so that you can use the additional support to push the canoe up.So, you could use a 2x4... tie it onto your roof rack to temporarily secure it and push the canoe up. If you do this regularly and you love your canoe, a piece of PVC with a couple of notches cut out of it so that you can just put the pipe over top of the rack and slip it out after works really well.
