When baby shows interest. When to introduce solid foods can be a real bone of contention for folks. Opinions aside, it's one that's best made between you and your baby in consultation with your pediatrician if necessary.
Most babies begin to show interest in what their family members are eating somewhere between 4-6 months or so and this is a very solid clue that baby is ready to begin experimenting with solid food. As for what to start with, AskDrSears.com offers this advice: "Begin with foods that are not likely to cause allergies and that are most like the milk baby is used to. If your baby is used to the sweet taste of human milk, start with mashed bananas."
There is a great deal of solid information and advice available to you on the Internet. I would point out two really good articles for much more information than I can provide here:"Breastfeeding your Child Effectively/Starting Solid Foods" by Vincent Iannelli, M.D.See here:pediatrics.about.com/cs/breastfeeding/a/..._slds. Always check with your baby's pediatrician first... ...but you should be safe to start your child on rice cereal now. Start with a tablespoon and mix water, breastmilk or formula in until you get a nice soupy consistency. You can make it thicker later as baby gets used to eating.
When you first start with the spoon, try to aim more towards the back center of the mouth. Babies have a natural tongue thrust and if you don't get the spoon in far enough they will just push out what you put in! :) Try the cereal for 3-5 days before introducing anything else, and then start with the level one veggies and do the same thing, try for 3-5 days on one type only (to rule out allergies), and then move on to the next one.
We didn't give our daughter fruits until she was about 9 months old because we wanted her to develop a good taste for veggies (and not sweets! ) first. Now she loves both fruit AND veggies, and there isn't a veggie out there that she won't eat!(She's 14 months old).
Good luck! :) .
No time like the present! I started my son on one serving of solids a day at 4 mos...then increased the totals from there (by six months he was eating three meals a day). IF it were me, I'd start with a late morning/early after noon meal at the time of a feeding.
I'd give 3-4oz of Organic Rice cereal, with a little bit (an ounce or two) of bananas. (slightly warmed) Both are easy on the digestive system and a great way for your baby to get used to the idea of eating. Follow up with some breast milk...if you plan to continue on that route.
Then, after a couple of days, I'd add a dinnertime meal of rice cereal with 1 to 2oz of squash or sweet potatoes. Either tastes so good, their hard to turn down. Enjoy all the fun of the first feeding, and don't forget the camera/recorder...ours is a blast to watch!

I suggest starting slow, and using Earth's Best. Since you baby will continue to get all the nutrition they need from breastfeeding, offering solids is not nutritionally necessary. However, that said, it is best to start teaching your baby how to swallow and eat solids between 6 and 7 months.
Note every child is different, so it is important to see if your baby is ready. Are they able to sit up on their own? Are they following your spoon when you put food in your mouth?
Here is a good article to see if your baby is ready for solids. askdrsears.com/html/3/T032000.asp Start slow and only introduce one new food every 3-5 days. I suggest starting with something simple like sweet potatoes.
You asked what kind is best, I'm assuming you mean brand? I used Earth's Best and continue to be pleased with their quality. I have tried each food I gave my son, and they actually tasted like the food they said they were.
If you want to get a good reference on how to make your own food I've included a few books I liked. I tried making my own, but I ended up using mostly Earth's Best Jars. 1 Granny's answer....I always said that when they're old enough to pick it up and put it in their mouths and eat it they're old enough for solids. If your baby is showing an interest then it may be time. I was kind of a hippie mom, but my theory was that God pretty much knew what he was doing.
He gave us teeth and the instinct to put things in our mouth when our bodies were ready for it. I never gave my kids baby food because I figured they were not ready for foods they couldn't chew. Get advice and trust your best instincts.
You are the best student of YOUR child. After studing and consulting with doctors, other mothers and wise old grandmothers, you will ultimatley decide what's best for your child.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
