Virtually anywhere Metal studs,as they're commonly called, can be found in any major home center eg: Home Depot,Lowes or any drywall supply center. Metal studs are usually only used for interior non-bearing walls where sheetrock will be installed. The most common use is commercial construction.
The "ledge" as you call it is called track. These act as the top and bottom plates for the studs. You need both track and studs to do any metal framing.
The screws are different too. They're commonly referred to as zip screws. They're very short and have self tapping heads to make them easier to install.
Drywall should only be installed on metal studs with fine thread drywall screws. Never use course thread on metal. Those are for wood only.
If you're going to install trim around any work framed with these,it must be screwed and never nailed. You need trim screws for that and all wood should be pre-drilled to prevent cracking. Don't forget to buy a #1 square drive bit for the trim screws.

At your home center My home center sells them, as does my local hardware store, and every lumber yard I know of. They're just not commonly used for residential work, so they're not always on display. You may have to ask for them.
That's changing, though. I saw some the other day at my local Home Depot. A good drill and drywall screws can go through these without pre-drilling.
They make nice construction material because they're very straight, relatively light, stiff, and strong. Be aware that they'll almost certainly have holes in them for wiring and so on - I've heard you can get them without the holes, but have never actually seen a source for those. Also, a reciprocating saw is a must for cutting them if you'll be doing more than a few cuts, and you should absolutely wear leather gloves while handling - their cut edges are razor sharp.
Since you're doing showcase art here, where people might be handling them without gloves, I'd strongly recommend you get a file and file off rough edges and corners.
Buy these aluminum studs at Home Depot, or Lowe's. http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/HomePageView?storeId=10051&catalogId=10053&langId=-1&orig_ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fsearch%3Fhl%3Den%26q%3Dhome%2Bdepot%26btnG%3DGoogle%2BSearch or lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=home Sources: My opinion: Buy these studs at Home Depot.
1 Good point with the screw threads, Joe. Forgot about that one. I LOVE square-head drive screws.
I'm not a contractor, so I discovered these by accident taking apart something built by one (about the only thing he did right). I'll never use anything else again.

2 You included plenty of information that I missed. I'm so shocked you're not a contractor, because you give such good answers regarding home improvement. This user has been banned from Askville.

Tell me about it. " "What is the history of big box home improvement stores in Michigan" "What organizations are out there to help the destitute with home improvement?" "Which is cheaper: gas water heater from hardware/home improvement store or local plumber? " "What tools are a must have for home improvement?
A vacation, electronics, home improvement etc.
I'm looking for a home improvement / DIY group on usenet.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
