White & Strunk The Elements of Style by White & Strunk is probably the most compact and well written grammer and style text in America. I keep a copy on my desk, and refer to it when I have a question. "White" is E.B. White, writer of a number of children's books (Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little). Strunk is William Strunk, a professor at Cornell University who originally wrote the book.

White studied under Strunk, and revised and updated the style manual throughout the 20th Century. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elements_of_Style I have also heard good things about the Chicago Manual of Style. Sources: Wikipedia.

The classic is Elements of Style Although there are thousands of books available, the classic is still the Strunk & White The Elements of Style. That's because it includes grammar as well as style. I see that amazon.Com shows many versions of this classic--the illustrated one looks interesting.

The Elements of Style" While there are hundreds of possible books, I think that the classic book by Strunk and White, The Elements of Style, is by far the best. It is not very long -- I think it is just over 100 pages long -- but it is very helpful, with well-defined sections. Also, it is now in its fourth edition since its initial printing in the first half of the 20th Century, which means that it has been 1) popular as a resource and 2) updated to incorporate changes in American language.

And, while I have a few reference books along these guides, it is the one that I personally consider essential. ALincolnNut's Recommendations The Elements of Style, Fourth Edition Amazon List Price: $9.95 Used from: $1.88 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 (based on 335 reviews) .
