Which should have more authority in the US, the laws of man (the country) or the laws of a religion (god)?

The laws of a nation should take precedence in all things. If not, can you say "anarchy? "Since religious dogma is based on myth and fictional beings, while some of the ideas they espouse are better perhaps in theory, look at the countries where religion is allowed to override the law - would you want to live in Saudi Arabia?

Yemen? Iran? Then we have past civilizations where these mythical beings I mentioned were the basis of the law - whatever happened to the great Viking and Norse civilizations?

The Egyptians? Even the great Roman Empire relied too heavily on religious teachings - ever hear of the Vestal Virgins? Humans - while flawed - are much more capable of producing and writing laws which are much more practical than those espoused by make-believe beings in Valhalla, Heaven, wherever.

We have the Supreme Court which has as its purpose the interpretation of those laws and while we may not always agree with their decisions, in the long run, they seem to do a fairly decent job of insuring that religion isn't allowed to rear its ugly head into the lives of those who don't believe in all those mythical beings and places. If we were going to let religious law rule, we may as well throw out the Constitution, put a preacher in the White House (maybe even a mullah) and have a state religion which everyone has to adhere to - or face the consequences.

Religouis veiws and beliefs, should stay out of the laws and politics of ANY Nation.

But, I await someone taking the alternat view so I can play devils advocate. Schelli 5 months ago .

Oh,some of our right wing extremist friends, should be jumping all over this saying the opposite.

Common sense tells us the laws of the country have more authority. But it's the interpretation of those laws that cause the controversy, not religion or ethnicity or anything else. What exactly are our rights to free speech, and to practice--or not practice our religion?

Should the allowing of a mention of a religious term or belief at a governmental gathering be considered a violation of the idea of church and state? Or is it a matter of free speech, and the allowing of the citizens to have religious thoughts and beliefs? What should happen?

I hope that people with good common sense and maturity make a wise decision to allow free speech and to show that we don't all need to inhibit others rights just because they don't believe the same way.

" Absolutely - religion should be practiced in an appropriate venue, such as home or church. Schelli 5 months ago .

Of course we do. But with all our freedoms, the come with limitations and should be followed with proprioty (sp? ).

Good question and one that was faced by the apostles centuries ago. The apostle Peter and others stated this when faced with a direct order from the powers at be to stop preaching about the Lord Jesus: “We must obey God as ruler rather than men". True Christians will always follow this command even if it leads to their demise!

If God's orders were good back then, why should they not have as much power today no matter what government we live under? Thanks for the great question Boosh .

I wanted to add to my answer. There are no excuses to disobey the laws of the land unless they CONFLICT with God's law. This is stated in the Scriptures at Romans the 13th chapter where we are admonished to obey the superior authorities. In no way would I support anarchy as one of the other question answerers stated.

God does not want anarchy here either. But what if a preacher wanted to go door to door in his ministry and the local magistrates tried to stop him. This has happened and at times the laws were maneuvered to the side of the magistrates.

That is not the case in the U.S. At present but there were times when the law protecting religious freedom to preach was reversed to prohibit this freedom. In that case, God's law should prevail. The right to religious freedom is fundamental in this country!

Thanks again Boosh .

You must no have seen my extension answer. Like to argue don't you! Thanks because a good argument never hurt anyone except the sheepish!

Schelli. After reading your response to Poppet it is pretty apparent that free speech should not apply to religious people. The First Amendment freedom of religion doesn't wxist in your view.

That is censorship straight up.

Free speech should apply to everyone; but people need to understand that their freedoms stop where another person's begin. That is why there needs to be a complete separation between church and state; the laws of god belong in the religious realm, the church, and the laws of the state belong outside religion. LOR or Law has its roots in man's interpritation of Cosmic Law, the Law of Love and that of Cause and Effect, mankind 'being mad as proved out in fact' and semingly unable to discern 'Truth' makes various ambiguous attempts at interpreting the 'way in which to live'. We may see the consciousness of any country based upon their understanding of the above. In truth there is only one Law 'that of Love' and all other laws are simply sub-laws of It, again, would be subject to any understanding of Compassion/Love towards our Brothers 'the Soul does not have gender'.

The Law of God was written upon the Rock of Right, Justice wrote the Law and Mercy was the Pen. This begs the question; What has religion, politics and countries to do with Love? Blessings .

Ehhh, the law of god was defined by man. (according to historical evidence) Schelli 5 months ago .

God's way...love is the right way. Religion may not be of God. The Laws of man should be the same as God's.

This has happened and at times the laws were maneuvered to the side of the magistrates. That is not the case in the U.S. at present but there were times when the law protecting religious freedom to preach was reversed to prohibit this freedom. In that case, God's law should prevail.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
