As far as I know when I researched it, it was the Egyptians The Egyptians were the first to incorporate perfume into their culture followed by the ancient Chinese, Israelites, Carthaginians, Arabs, Greeks, and Romans. The earliest use of perfume bottles is Egyptian and dates to around 1000 BC. Perfume is thousands of years old - the word "perfume" comes from the Latin per fume "through smoke".
One of the oldest uses of perfumes comes form the burning of incense and aromatic herbs used in religious services, often the aromatic gums, frankincense and myrrh, gathered from trees. Sounds like, we may have grew up during the same era (70's), because in high school, I also wore: Loves Baby Soft and Sweet Honesty from Avon:) I also wore, Charlie by Revlon, Chantilly and Jovans White Musk. Love's Baby Soft and Jovan's White Musk wear my favorites.
These scents bring back wonderful memories. Sources: http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blperfume.htm .
I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon" (Proverbs 7:17). Thus, god invented perfumes. Humans simply took that fact and determined on their own what to do with them.
For example, that above verse is followed by verses 18 + 19: "Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves. For the goodman (husband) is not at home, he is gone a long journey. " The perfume is for the purpose of augmenting the act of adultery.
But the fact that it's referenced in Scripture gives an idea that it's even older than this 900-1,000 b.c. Text.
Oh! De London (hope that doesn't give away my age) Oh! De London®1 compare to Yardley of London®-brand Originally introduced by Yardley of London®during the Mod era in the 1960’s, this scent embodied the growing fascination with youth and all things Brit.
With supermodel Jean Shrimpton as their spokesperson, Yardley of London® broke away from their image as a purveyor of stodgy classic English matronly scents, like their famous Yardley English Lavender®. http://store.scent-works.com/ohdeloyoflot.html Then when I was a little older I found THE perfume of my life! Maroc. It was in a fold out in the New York Times Magazine.
My daughter was napping, I rubbed in on my wrist and fell in love with the smell! I used it for many years, got tons of compliments and then it was DISCONTINUED! I bought 3 bottles that were still hanging around in stores and I really tried to find a new scent, but nothing was as good.
I searched the internet from time to time and finally found a place in New York that had a stash of 13 bottles. I made the trip and bought them all! Then, as I was down to 3 bottles, heaven heard my prayer and the recipe was purchased by Long Lost Perfumes.
I was saved! So if you have a perfume from your high school days that you would love to have again, try them: http://www.irmashorell.net/Perfume-and-Fragrance?search=maroc They have Oh de London too! But I still, after all these years, get compliments on my Maroc.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
