Many people who work in forests like to sing to themselves. The tunes that they sing are called "logger rhythms". The use these songs to keep them happy and contented as they cut down trees.
I know of some loggers who use logger rhythms in order to keep some regularity in the way they cut. The pull the saw towards themselves on the upbeat, and then push it on the down beat. Without logger rhythms, we would have a lot of unhappy woodcutters.
One can add logs to multiply numbers. That was the basis for the "slide rule. " org/wiki/Slide_rule.
Imagine you're a ship captain in the year 1928 and you're trying to compute your position. To do so you take a few star angles and then follow the procedure in your navigation book. You get to the step: "Now multiply the two star azimuths: 38.8834574 for Capella, 63.939345 for Sirius".
No calculators back then. Pen and paper. The ship is rolling. It probably takes you ten minutes to do this multiplication, which involves summing up 100 partial products, and the answer is probably wrong.
The alternative is to look up the logarithm of these two numbers, add the logs, and then reverse-lookup the log back to get the product. This only takes like ONE minute, and since you're just adding two ten-digit numbers, the answer is much more likely to be correct. Nowdays we have calculators that can multiply and divide, so logarithms are not quite so life-crucial.
Still , the concept of logarithms is very useful as lots of phenomena are naturally logarithmic, so it helps to plot and calculate that stuff with logs in mind.

This is how slide rules work too-- you multiply by adding two lengths, divide by subtracting the two.
To make things even more interesting, the old log tables had quite a few errors, since they too were all calculated by hand. It wasn't a very fun job to be a navigator at sea back then.
Logarithms are an easy way to represent a number variable that has enormous range, like the amplitude of a signal in audio equipment. The range of the highest note to the lowest may be 1 volt peak to peak at the highest and just noise at it's lowest at .00001 volts. 1/.0001 = 10,000 to 1It is easier to say the noise is 80db down.(db = decibels, a logarithmic scale)..
They are the thing that will collapse our total economy (as was done with the real estate market a couple of years ago, but in totality this time) because of their use in stock market investing. Com/magazine/2010/12/ff_ai_flashtrading.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
