Of course you're allowed to have positive LGBT characters. The point is to make them realistic. If their actions match who they are, their sexuality should be secondary.
If you write them overly heroic - it'll come off as preachy. So, like any writing it's not so much what you write but HOW you write it. Like the scene you describe - it can be boring to a reader to have a big scene where two people just talk - even if it's preventing a suicide.
It can seem contrived - a ploy a writer uses as an excuse to tell (not show) how two characters feel about each other. Basically, I get why you want to write about this. It's a very valid point.
But don't get caught up in the statement you want to make and loose your characters. LGBT are people like everyone else - both good and bad, happy and sad, don't make your story about their sexuality. Write about them as complete people.
Good luck.
You should start with choosing the proper genre for your book.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
