It used to be that Veteran's Day and Memorial Day were days which were observed properly - by recognizing the veterans that fought during wartime and either gave everything (their life) or who served honorably defending this country. Veteran's Day is coming up and its so what? Just like Memorial Day is a so what type of proposition.
Why aren't we recognizing the service the vets have performed whether we believe in the war in which they fought or not? Those are two days we should set aside our political leanings and honor the vets. What happened?
And, do you plan to honor the vets in some way? Asked by OldppieHatesNewAV 50 months ago Similar questions: holidays observed appropriately Politics & Law > Military.
I put out my flag and reflect on my uncle (for whom I am named) who was KIA in WW2. But most people, since the ..... institution of the volunteer army, don’t interact very much any more with veterans, so the typical citizen’s connection with these holidays is fading. Fewer people these days have experienced talking with people like my grandmother, mother, and aunts, who felt until they died the pain of losing one son/brother and having another severely wounded, yet were proud of the sacrifice for the safety of all our people.
And the wars we've been fighting lately have become unpopular, so those holidays are tainted in some people's minds by that connection.
I think you have a point Old I attended a Memorial Day ceremony this year. They had a color guard and members of the CAP, civil war reenactors, Arizona Rangers, speakers. It was nice but sparsely attended. Veterans Day seems to be the red headed step child though in that people do not think about it much.
Rabid consumerism does not help much either. Commerce has helped to turn these holidays into another reason for a friggin sale. I have a few suggestions though.
One, show an interest in vet and try to get him or her to talk their time in the military. I think most people can learn and understand more about the hard work, devotion to duty and sacrifices they all make. You might also hear some hilarious or incredibly interesting stories, particularly if you were not in the service yourself.
Two, read books about the military history and ponder what war really URL2 many people have some bumper sticker, idolized version of our troops. If you have never been fought in a war or been engulfed in one you can not know what that really means. If you talk to vets and read and question and consider you can begin to empathize and respect vets for who they were or really are.
I doubt many people on the right or the left do much of this. Many people on the far left have an aversion to military, really just another form of bigotry. Many people on the right have an idolized jingoistic version of vets.
Neither is true, neither shows much respect. A good book to start with is "American Patriots" by Gail Buckley .
What--and give up the chance to run a SALE?! How unamerican of you, Old Your idea thwarts the universal "Big Bidness" goal of turning EVERY occasion into the perfect chance to make a sale. Heck, let's put it into the guise of helping the vets, and give them a discount!
My family made a practice of spending some time on those days talking about and telling stories about family members who were/are veterans--so that my kids, who don't remember their Great Grandfather and one of their Grandfathers, know that they did service, where and what kind. We expanded that to some further discussion of military service in general... it's harder to pin the kids down, though, now--one's away at college, the other's an adult. We do think about it, though, and I REALLY resent the "sales opportunity" that so many days to commemorate something have turned into.
Labor Day, Presidents Day, 4th of July, Veterans Day, Memorial Day... WHY does it always get tuned into selling, and why do we allow it? The Viet Nam War and now Iraq came along, both of which turned whole generations off to our foreign wars. During WW2 and Korea, Americans were fighting for a cause they could understand to stop and punish the JApanese who attacked us and their evil allies ,the Nazi Germans. With Korea, the threrat of Communist domination of the world was a real threat.
The College generation at the time of the Viet Nam War did not feel that the war was just and openly rose in revolt. The sixties thereupon became a time of rvolt and counter revolution. There were drafts just as there were in the 40's and early 50's but now the cause was not personal, not a direct threat to the security of the U.S. Our participation was also seen as support for another dictatorship, that of the Generals in Saigon and most young Americans became noisily opposed.
This led to a counter culture that spurned all things military including our Veterans, most of whom had no choice but to become cannon fodder for the politicians who could not extracate themselves from the mess they created. Does this sound familiar today? These youngsters are now our middle aged Americans approaching old age.Is it no wonder that the holidays set aside to honor those who served and those who gave their lives are not as popular as they were in the years immediately following the two world wars and Korea.
And to make things worse, there is now Iraq which is adding fuel to the Viet Nam fire. Our wars are no longer perceived as just wars and our military oriented holidays are suffering the consequenses..
Look what they did to Christmas! They call it Holiday not Christmas.. Xmas.. They took Christ out.. It sucks..Veteran's should get more then they do.. They shouldn't have to pay sale tax.. They should have better health Ins. God bless them... The Gov.. made too many holidays that don't mean much to most americans.
And to make up for the new ones.. They had to toss alot of the others..God forbid we get more days off with pay.. That would take away from the rich! Sources: Common sense.. Sorry.. Mad .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
