Meaning of the flashing lights on new Apple iPod Shuffle. I have one of these little gems too -- really, it's no bigger than a book of matches and stores a gig of music. What's not to love?
-- and it's the first iPod I've owned that didn't have a display screen, so I too am learning how to read the tiny little colored light to figure things out. Here's a picture to make you salivate and think about why you might just need a second iPod for Christmas:apple ipod gen1>Okay, well, I don't want to be a shill for Apple (I mean, heck, I had to buy my Shuffle, so it's not like they're sponsoring this in any way! :-) so let's talk about the color sequences and what they mean.
First off, there are a number of different functions that are denoted by different color sequences, so flashing green might mean one thing when you're listening to music, and something else entirely when it's plugged in and charging or syncing with your PC. The primary functions are powering on, charging, syncing, and general feedback. Let's look at each.
When you turn on your iPod Shuffle, the light will indicate your current charge level:green = 30-100% charge, you're good to cruiseorange = 10-30% charge, low, but still good for a short workoutred = less than 10% charge, time to plug it inno light = too late, you've run out of juiceIf you see an alternating pattern of green-orange-orange then your Shuffle's crashed or otherwise needs to be restored. Needless to say, that's not a good thing, but probably easy to fix when you hook it up to your PC or Mac. When you're charging up your Shuffle, there are three possible light states:orange = charginggreen = fully charged, unplug whenever you're ready to goflashing orange = busy, either syncing or in use as a remote diskWhen you're playing some music, you can see visual feedback on what's happening and what state you're in:Press play andsolid green = you're playing musicflashing green = you're in pause modePress and hold play andgreen-orange-orange-orange = you've disabled your buttonsorange-green-green-green = you've reenabled your buttonsThat's bound to be one where people panic and fear that they've broken their shuffles, I bet.
If your buttons aren't working at all on your Apple iPod Shuffle 2nd Gen, then press and hold your Play button to see what light sequence you're given. This is also shown by the Shuffle flashing orange when you push a button too. If your player flashes alternating green and orange, you have no music in the Shuffle.
This can be because it's fresh out of the box, or because, well, something's happened and the music has vanished. Either way, time to sync with your iTunes library. If you're seeing a flashing red sequence, you're just about out of battery and just need to plug it in so it can charge up.
Finally, Apple has some good tech notes on the new Shuffle too that you might want to check out if you're still a bit baffled by this tiny engineering wonder: Understanding status light behavior, Shuffle Second Gen, Frequently Asked Questions and iPod Shuffle Support Overview. What have you tried so far so we can narrow down a list of possible solutions? Anchorposted 2006-Feb-18, 1pm AESTUser #33728 14279 postsAqueasWhirlpool Forums Addict What is actually going wrong? You didn't really explain it well... the shuffle sends a lot of messages with those lights... anchorposted 2006-Feb-18, 1pm AESTUser #63649 6141 postscc2104338Whirlpool Forums Addict aqueas writes...What is actually going wrong?
Is anything actually wrong? According to the user manual an orange light means:1) buttons have been disabled to prevent them from accidently being pressed2) it is being used as a storage disk3) must eject shuffle before disconnecting it from the computer. Is it happening at times other than described above?
Anchorposted 2006-Feb-18, 2pm AESTUser #55070 83 postsDannym85Forum Regular ok sorry aboutt he lack of information...a reset to my knowledge is a 5 second turn off and then switching the ipod back on...I've tried that...the lights are both orange and green interchanging... it isn't just the orange light flashing. When I connect it to the computer the orange light on the ipod keeps flashing, as if it were updating something... but I left it connected to the computer for 2 days without turning off the computer, and still the same thing. I've tried resetting it back to factory settings, but when I open up the update program for the ipod it says 'unable to mount ipod'and itunes doesn't see an ipod either... but the computer picks it up as a storage device, but it is still unaccessible through explorer...hope this helps more.
Anchorposted 2006-Feb-19, 12am AESTUser #90729 108 postsTJPForum Regular Sounds like the flash RAM is kaput. My previous 1GB shuffle displayed exact same symptoms you describe after just 8 months! I retuned the ipod to Nextbyte in Adelaide (although I didn't buy it from there) & was told the flash RAM had failed.
I suggest you go back to the retailer & explain what is happening. They will send your now deceased shuffle off to be replaced (assuming its still under warranty). A new ipod was sent to Nextbyte within 5 working days.
Anchorposted 2006-Feb-19, 8am AESTUser #55070 83 postsDannym85Forum Regular yeah, figured out late last nite that it was the memory inside... because the restore program FINALLY picked the device up and was able to get the serial number and reckognise an ipod, but it said N/A next to the name and N/A next to the filesize... will take it into Apple tomorrow... *crosses fingers* anchorposted 2006-Feb-19, 10am AESTUser #43686 992 postsTotally SucksWhirlpool Enthusiast I see quite a few problems like this with the iPod shuffles at work. I've seen at least 06-Feb-18 come back with various problems relating to the PC either not recognising the device or the thing doesn't play music that's on it. http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=47387i have an ipod shuffle. It turns on but then there is a quick both green and yellow flash and then just the yellow light starts to blink when it's connected to my any mac i've tried.
It's not charging but the battery indicator is green right now. When I unplug from the computer and I hit play the lights flash green and yellow. I've tried resetting it and i've tried to restore the software with the updater but my macs don't see the ipod over usb.
However my system profiler does see the ipod. I just got this thing (on ebay, it was new and sealed but it's out of warranty come to find out). It was workin but now this.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
