The United States currently has the world's finest healthcare system. " No, I don't really think you can make that claim..... Two years ago the New York Times editorial posted an article about how the US health system (1), as it stands now, compares to other western countries. I'll just summarize the main points of the article below * In 2000 the World Health Organization made the first major effort to rank the health systems of 191 nations.
France and Italy took the top two spots; the United States was 37th. * In 2007 the Commonwealth Fund results ranked the United States last or next-to-last compared with five other nations — Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. *Fairness - The United States ranks dead last on almost all measures of equity because we have the greatest disparity in the quality of care given to richer and poorer citizens.
Or this article in the New England Journal of Medicine (2) "It is hard to ignore that in 2006, the United States was number 1 in terms of health care spending per capita but ranked 39th for infant mortality, 43rd for adult female mortality, 42nd for adult male mortality, and 36th for life expectancy. " If anything these statistics show that although many citizens actually think they have the best health care in the world, they do not. In terms of fairness, access, preventable deaths the US is really really bad :( I think the only people who feel safe and confident in the US health system have money - and there in lies the root of the problem. In Australia I can get any treatment I like, cancer treatment, transplants, critical care and palliative care all for absolutely nothing.
If I have a car accident I will be treated with everything the medical profession has available and it will not cost me a cent. I can go to the doctors with a sick child, no money and come out with medicine. I can go to the hospital and all they ask me is if I want to be admitted as a private or public patient.
If I say public that's it, it makes NO difference to my treatment. The only difference is as a private patient I might get a room to myself and the choice of doctor..... My taxes pay for this, and I thank our society every darn day that our taxes do this.It saves more money than it costs because we get treatment early, we aren't afraid to go to the doctor because it means no money for food or bills, we GO! When we need to because we can...and we get better faster and our children are looked after and our elderly population is looked after.... Unfortunately, when talking to people in the US they just don't see how this can work....they are too caught up in the MONEY side of health, rather than the outcomes.
They don't understand that the money spent is saving so much more! They don't understand that universal health care is a human right, not a reward for earning money.....and no matter how many statistics are given, no matter how many people say "stop stressing" they will never believe....its just so sad...and unnecessary. Reform is what is needed - it has to be better than what you've got now :(.
I guess it must be because it lets so many Americans go without insurance and die. We needed to thin the herd anyway, why bother trying to save the folks who were not or are not capable of getting jobs or keeping jobs that afforded them opportunities to get or keep health insurance. What value do they have?
Seriously, I have no idea why anyone would not want to let more Americans get affordable health care. We collectively decided to pay for centralized highways so we could get back and fourth to our selected destinations, we collectively decided to allow the old and infirm to get government funded insurance, we all pay for public education and everyone has the chance to go to school.. it is actually required that a child is enrolled. .. police ...fire department ..armed forces ..etc etc etc There are so many centralized features to American society.. why not health care?
Our system is faulty now.. the health care is great the way people get it is terrible. I do not have the solution but any plan that gets more Americans *insured now* is a thousand percent better than the plan we have now. Don't be scared to vote this unhelpful.
I am expecting you will.
