Why was diana a princess but kate isnt?

Kate is a Princess. She is Her Royal Highness the Princess William of Wales. Diana was NEVER officially Princess Diana.

The people just called her that. Just as Kate is not Princess Catherine, but she'll probably be called that by a lot of people. After her wedding, Diana was Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales, because she was married to the Prince of Wales, and she didn't lose that title when they divorced, although she did lose the right to use "Her Royal Highness" in the title.

Diana also had the title that Camilla currently uses (Duchess of Cornwall) because she was married to Charles who is the Duke of Cornwall. Currently, Camilla is HRH the Princess of Wales, but she doesn't use the title because it's too closely associated with Diana The Queen's husband is not the King, because the status of King outranks the status of Queen. The only way to be a King is to inherit the throne.

A woman can be Queen because she is married to the King, OR because she inherits the throne in her own right - this is called being a Queen Regnant (reigning Queen). Got it?

Diana was a princess after her marriage because Charles was already Prince of Wales when he married her. Charles is still THE Prince of Wales. Queen Elizabeth is the "Top Dog" which means no one can outrank her, not even her husband.

Her husband is Prince Consort because he can't outrank the Queen. He married INTO the royal family like how Diana and Kate married into the family. When Charles becomes King, Camilla will probably become Princess Consort because it will piss off too many people if she becomes Queen of England.

When William becomes the official Prince of Wales, I am sure Kate will become Princess of Wales too.
