There is an alternative - food etc and astronauts are currently carried between Earth and the ISS on Russian Soyuz rockets. PLUS the DragonX craft recently sent supplies successfully. The shuttles were very old and had a few problems.
The money and political will simply wasn't there to keep them operational or replace them with something new straight away.
I am consistently saddened by questions like this. The INTERNATIONAL space station has been serviced routinely by the Russian Soyuz craft ever since it was constructed. As indeed was the Mir space station before then.
Since the Soyuz has been the workhorse of the Russian space program for almost half a century now I find the level of ignorance of its existence, never mind its uses, to be incredibly sad. Even more sad is the fact that only last week the news was full of reports of the Space X Dragon capsule sending up food and supplies to the ISS, and yet people still ask questions as though NASA was idiotic and left a bunch of men stranded in space with no food or way home when they retired the shuttle.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
