He will eat when spoon-fed (or hand-fed) and will drink from a bottle, but will not take food himself and put it in his mouth. He never started this behavior, except one bite of a cracker one day after not eating much for a couple of days. Any ideas why or whether this is a cause for concern?

I would certainly mention it to the pediatrian. It could be a host of things, but something a person knowledgeable about child development can help with.
It could be a concern If all the child's developmental stages are normal, it may just be a slow learned motor skill. But if there are delays in other areas, or the pregnancy and delivery were not straight forward, it may pay to seek further insight for this. Does he put other things into his mouth like toys or things he finds around him?
Has been able to crawl yet? Is there any medical problems within any immediate or extended family that could be inherited traits? If not, there may be a further neurological problem underlying.
There are hundreds of reasons that a child may not do something at the appropriate age. If he does not start to display signs or developing further, I would say get a referral to a good paediatrition to see if there is anything to worry about. If you feel brushed off as a neurotic parent or an idiot, seek another doctor who gives a damn.
Your instincts as a parent, regardless of how many children you have, are worth acting upon. I was fobbed off twice with two of my kids and one was finally diagnosed with lactose intolerance and Passive reflux. S esophogus was damaged and needed medication for it.My other child has autism.
You may not have the certificates to display on your wall, but you know your children better than anyone else. If you are concerned, you have the right to demand to be heard and your child to be taken care of. The experts, most of the time, but not always, know best.
It’s really rare that when a baby is experiencing genuine hunger, that he/she wouldn’t willingly (on their own)eat a banana, or other soft fruit (like avocado) when placed in front of them. Those two fruits were very successful for my twins when they were eating their first solid foods. Also, Durian (found in some asian markets) is very much a favorite of babies I have seen eating it!
Hope that helps! Good Luck, Rebecca .
1 maybe he's just not as hungry as people expect him to be. If that is for sure not the case, you should ask the doctor. If he is not experiencing that instinct to "put everything in his mouth" there may be a concern.
I would not panic, but I would bring it up to the doctor. Isn't there a 12 month well baby visit? .

2 Be glad he eats! My now 15mo did not eat ANYTHING until he was 12mo. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - No child has ever starved himseld to death.
He'll figure it out.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
