WPA for my windows XP laptop?

WPA for my windows XP laptop I have a wireless router and I am trying to set it up to use WPA encrypting. My Macbook had no trouble but my Windows XP laptop only has a WEP option. I have upgraded to service pack 2 which is supposed to have WPA support....not that I can find... I downloaded a patch for WPA support but still cant find anywhere in the wireless network setup where I can enter a password that isnt ASCI or whatever.

I believe that the problem..... is with the wireless driver in the laptop. If your laptop has built-in wireless, check your manufacturer’s latest drivers; if it’s an add-on (PCMCIA or USB) check with the manufacturer of the hardware for new drivers. I have had similar problems with some wireless PCMCIA cards, and found that some of the earlier chipsets did not support WPA.

If it's the chipset and your wireless is built-in, the only solution might be buying a PCMCIA or USB wireless unit and disabling the internal one.

Check your wireless card. You didn't mention which wireless network adapter you're using in your laptop, but that's where I would be looking for the WPA support. The problem isn't going to be at the operating system level, it's going to be what security the wireless adapter supports.

Look to the manufacturer website for any updates or patches for the driver. ALternatively you can get a different network adapter that has the support you're looking for (internal, USB, PCMCIA, etc). Hope that helps!.

Windows or a new NIC driver will support WPA In Windows, goto Network Connections (if you can't find it, just open My Computer and type Network Connections in the address bar). Right click the Wireless Connection and go to properties. Click on the Wireless Networks tab.

Try Intel ProSET Manager I really hope that you have an Intel Wireless chip/card. In that case I strongly recommend you install Intel ProSET Manager software and then try it. I have seen countless situations where the Windows native wireless manager pretty much gave up and the Intel Software did the trick.
