Yay! Im getting a guinea pig soon.. I need as much infomation about them as possible!?

As long as they have plenty of food, shelter, water and attention then it's perfectly fine to keep them outside. In fact, it is much better for them outside if you always have the air con or heater on, as guinea pigs(and humans) need fresh air, not circulated already used air. All you have to look at is how many 'flues and viruses are made in people due to ever changing temperatures.

What worries me(and most people) about keeping animals outside if you live in suburbia is people stealing your pets, or feral animals getting to the cage. I would suggest in this case to actually build your own cage(the pet store ones are too flimsy and will succumb to any animal/person no matter what their size or what you do) so you can be rest assured that nothing is going to get to your piggies. You can make one cheap enough that is going to be strong enough, and you can also then make it exactly how you want it(lockable, steal proof)!

If you can't make a cage, then maybe see if you can bring them in at night time to keep them safe when no one can supervise. Alternatevly, see if you can put some sort of fence around your cage(that will double as a ground floor cage so they can get out for a bit of a romp on the grass!) or keep it as close as possible to your bedroom window or front/back door, to hamper any attempts. A blanket will only protect them from the weather, unfortunatly.

It won't stop wild animals or theves(sp?) from taking a look see. I have a homemade bank of hutches(4 in total, one level on top of the other, then a divider down the middle, that I can also change into 8 when I need them) put together right in front of our veranda and I live on acreage so this gives me alot more comfort in knowing my herd is safe, but I know how difficult it can be for someone who lives in town! To keep them warm at night time, I would suggest having one section of the cage closed in(with an opening for the door of course!) and putting fleece or hay in there.

This will be sufficent to keep them warm. Guinea pigs are excellent at keeping themselves warm, it's just in the heat you need to be careful and keep them cool. Just ensure that they have both sun(they do like to sunbake) and shade and they will be fine.

As for ''any critters''(I'm assuming you mean bugs and spiders lol), I would suggest a good cleaning routine of the whole cage at least once a week to keep all of them at bay. You can't use pesticides as these are harmful to your piggies. But as long as when you see them you get rid of them, your piggies will be safe!

Best of luck, congrats on getting your piggies! They are an adorable family addition. ROFLMFAO @''fresh air WILL make them sick''.

Are you kidding? Please tell me you are kidding. You then go on to say that s/he should take them out outside for a little grass time.

Um...Confused much!?!? Isn't that ''giving them fresh air''? One of the only reasons a guinea pig HAS TO be kept inside is when the child is too lazy to get outside and take care of it.

The only other 3 reasons I can think of is if you KNOW you have wild animals around, people who might steal them and if it is too hot/cold to allow for it(and I am talking extremes here, not our current climate. There are things we can do to control these things without resorting to air con and heaters, all of which have been proven to hinder peoples healths, why risk your pets?).

Hi! That's exciting that you are getting two guinea pigs. I have 2 myself Mikky and Sammy.

What I would do is make a plexi glass cage. You can but plexi glass at any hardwood store. At the top you can put grid so air can come through.

You don't want the glass to high because when the pee evaporates it needs to circulate. In the winter or when it is cold you should get a heating pad to put under the cage. Then get a sheet of plexi glass and drill multiple holes in it to cover the grid but the holes keep the air circulating.

I hope this helped! If you need anymore guinea pig answers please email me at [email protected].

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
