Comparison

WebKnox vs Wolfram|Alpha API

Wolfram|Alpha is a computation engine. WebKnox is an answer API with ready-made cards. They overlap less than you might think, and some apps should use both.

The short answer

Choose Wolfram|Alpha for computation

Maths, science, engineering and curated data. That's what it was built for, and WebKnox doesn't try to match it.

Choose WebKnox for cards

Weather, recipes, nutrition, comparisons, translations and media, as cards your users can see and tap.

What the swap looks like

Both are one HTTP call. Wolfram's LLM API returns text for a model to read. WebKnox returns a card for your user to see.

Wolfram|Alpha LLM API
curl "https://www.wolframalpha.com/api/v1/llm-api?input=weather+in+Dresden&appid=$APPID"
WebKnox
curl https://api.webknox.com/v2/answers \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $WEBKNOX_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Weather in Dresden"}]}'

Using both

Give your model both as tools: WebKnox for questions with a card, Wolfram|Alpha for computation. WebKnox answers matched: false when it has nothing, so the model can move on.

Questions about the comparison

Is WebKnox a Wolfram|Alpha alternative?

For everyday questions shown as cards, yes. For computation beyond conversions and simple maths, no: Wolfram|Alpha is the better tool there.

How much does the Wolfram|Alpha API cost?

Non-commercial use is free for up to 2,000 calls a month. Wolfram doesn't publish commercial prices: its pricing page leads to a contact form. Older price lists still turn up in search, so ask Wolfram for a current quote.

Does WebKnox do maths?

Conversions and simple maths, in English and German. For anything harder, use Wolfram|Alpha.

Can I use the free plans in a commercial product?

WebKnox's free plan works in any project, as long as its credit stays visible. Wolfram|Alpha's free tier is for non-commercial use.

Wolfram|Alpha is a trademark of its owner. WebKnox isn't affiliated with Wolfram.
